That's kinda what i was thinking but the engine is non interference? Timing looked good too.

Its definitely a interference engine.. No idea what it wrong but it doesnt sound like rod knock. Is anything hitting the flexplate/flywheel

Timing tensioner? What year is it? Did you pull the valve cover and check the clearance of the cam shims? Lifter stuck... hell man. It's really hard to say until you pull it apart.

So a good weekend comes to a end. Got the 03 back on friday with its lovely new trans. Sold the Navi today..
