On the axle, just to the passenger side of the differential.

Ok thanks. Is it just one? Or one for each hub? It acts like it is trying to lock in hubs but the just won't go all the way. It will make a grinding noise at each hub. I'm hoping it's not my hubs.

Yup. Just one. Pull it out, and clean and lube it real good. Then before you re-install it, hook up the vacuum lines and work the dash **** back and fourth between 2hi and 4 hi to make sure it moving its full range.

Where are the 4x4 relays for a 2001 F150 supercrew?

I replaced GEM with one off ebay, replaced tcase motor with one from Advance auto, switch checked out good,no fuses are blown.

I get nothing when I turn the switch,no noise,no click,no clunk.

I checked the 3 relays under the ovel panel on pass side dash but I dont think they control the 4x4.

Im stumped.

If its still off try putting it in neutral and shifting to low instead of it sitting in park.

Well, I tried all I could, the vacuum works, the actuator is moving fully, the TC motor is working so I took it to the shop, they told me something is broken in the front dif (switch lever or something)....and both lower ball joints are toast....

My spidey senses tell me it will not be cheap to get it back....

Default Am I missing something here?

It's an electronic shift-on-the-fly 4WD.

Problem:
  • 4Hi does NOT work, but 4Lo does
  • If I switch it to 4Hi and then back to 2Hi while driving, it makes a grinding sound until I stop and switch it back to 4Hi, then back to 2Hi again
What I've looked at:
  • Case motor sounds like it is working
  • 4X4 indicator light in dash is working
  • Solenoids by the battery both click when switch is turned
I'm a mechanical newbie, so go easy on me. I took a video of the vacuum actuator and I'm not sure if it is working right. Another post I saw said you have to uncover it to see if it is working, but mine has no cover on it. Watch as a switch to 4Hi and back.

Here is the video:

I don't know where to go from here. Can anybody point me in the right direction?
