In the past I have had a little trouble with it going into 4wd, sometimes it would and sometimes it wouldn't. The light would indicate that it was in 4wd sometimes but it wouldn't be. Sometimes it wouldn't go out of 4wd, but I could turn the switch to 2wd and turn the engine off and back on and it would go off. Now it won't "click" at all into 4wd, which i think is the transfer case shift relay. It doesn't go into 4wd high or low and even before when the relay would click it would never go into 4lo just 4high. The fuses are not blown. Anyone have any ideas? Im thinking start by getting a new relay and see if it starts clicking again and maybe the 4lo light will start coming on. Thanks everyone

Sounds like something wrong in the differential itself??

Try tapping the transfer case motor with a hammer first. See if that helps your problem at all and let me know.

I honestly have no idea besides taking the diff apart and seeing if something looks broken on the side of the diff your having trouble with.

So here is my issue. I have check that the actuator moves freely and through its full stroke. But the arm that attatches to the actuator has a "hitch" in its movement. What is my next step to getting this to work? 2003 FX4 4.6

Anybody ever have the 4wd engage by itself, without touching the switch? When it happened I couldnt get it out. Tried twisting the switch a thousand times, in gear, in neutral, engine on, engine off, backed up about a block. Finally drove it home (20 miles) at 25mph. When i shut it off I could hear and smell the 90 weight boiling. It sat for 3 years and when i started it back up it was no longer in 4wd but now will not engage at all.
