Default Need help for modifications to save fuel

With gas quickly on its way to 5 dollars a gallon. I want to save some money. I don't won't to spend a ton doing it. I could careless if I lose performance. Is there some chip that will help? I have a 5.4L.

im in the same boat as you, heres what i plan on doing that i think will give me some extra mpg

1)Cold Air Intake

2) Exhaust

3) PHP tuner, with a economy tune

4) install E-fan

Im hoping this will give me at least 3 mpg better. i just picked up a new 08 screw and im getting 11.3 mpg city

A free flowing exhaust will not affect the fuel economy nor would an increased air flow. An e-fan might be a good idea. A php tuner might help.

quoted from another site

My experience has been this..

Added a Borla cat-back and gained 1.8 mpg highway right away.

Then added a 3" AF1 intake, no noticeable gain in mpg.

Then added Troyer's tuning and gained another .5 mpg or so.

Though I have to say that adding the tuning causes me to plant my right foot much more often than I would ever have done before.

So I'd say that a quality straight-through exhaust is the best bang for the buck, mpg wise.

Although any of the good custom tuners on here can write ya up a fuel economy tune. I've just never seen anyone here who's used one.. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has, what difference it makes..

I recommend a nice, fat block of wood strapped to the bottom of the gas pedal.

the best mod ive done for mpg's is a scangauge2. it of course doesnt actually do anything other then read mpg's and you can use this info to adjust how you drive which will result in better mpg's

I'm using an old trick that my Cherokee Indian friend taught me...

They now call me "FeatherFoot".......17.5 MPG back and forth to work.
I'm cheating though, I've got the Magnaflow catback Single.

another free way to get better mpg's is to keep the truck free of dead weight. if the bed is full of junk, its killing your mpg's. i pulled out my spare tire. i have a locker so if my rear tire blows i have to put on a 35" tire or get towed. plus with the lift, the factory jack (which is also gone thanks to my subs) isnt worth a damn and i doubt its tall enought to help.

And you'll spend over $1k to do all of that. What will you gain for your money? Maybe an extra 1-2 mpg's. How long will it take you in gas savings to recoup that extra money you'll spend? Years! Don't do performance mods simply to squeeze out an extra 1-2 mpg because it just isn't cost effective. Do performance mods because you want extra performance and drivability out of your truck and you won't be dissappointed. I have the big 3 performance mods (CAI, exhaust & tuner) and couldn't be happier with the results, but I didn't go into it thinking I'll do it for the mpg's I'll gain.
