In Michigan to carry a handgun on you in a vehicle or have a pistol loaded in a vehicle you must have a CPL. Once a weapon is in a vehcile its considered concealed and you must have a CPL to CC. If you do not have a CPL the weapon must be unloaded and in a case away from the access of the driver. I have my CPL and I almost always have my pistol in its holster on my hip. Very seldom do I leave it in the truck, thats a last resort always.

I have a truck gun that stays in the center console with a spare magazine. It stays loaded with a full mag and one in the chamber. An unloaded gun is nothing more than a paperweight. at that point, you might as well have a rock, they are less awkward to throw.
If I am not carrying my XD, the truck gun goes with me when I get out of the truck somewhere (other than my house). I try not to travel through states that do not have reciprocity with Texas, so I dont worry too much about other states laws. besides, I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
For my XD, I have a crossbreed supertuck. Originally bought it for my 1911, but when I sold it, I just heated and remolded the kydex to fit my XD. For the truck gun (kel-tec PF9) I keep it in a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster. Depending on what I am wearing, it either goes in the pocket, or just gets tucked into my britches. The texture on the outside of the holster (designed to grip the inside of your pocket to aid with drawing) keeps it in its place between my hip and my belt no problem.
In Texas, you can carry in your vehicle without a CHL, but cannot carry it with you to a store/restaurant/etc without the license. Your vehicle is considered an extension of your home, and you do not need a license to carry there.

If I am off duty on my waist. A word of advise for those that carry either on them or in the vehicle, during a traffic stop I would politely tell the peace officer you have a firearm and depending on your state statutes tell them you have proper paperwork for it. Hands on steering wheel and be courteous about it. I would much rather someone tell me as opposed to it being a surprise. You most likely have no intent however you need to realize we are trained for the worst possible scenarios and most people are law abiding citizens, it's the other 2% we train and prepare for.
Just my 2 cents.

Not if you are a CHL in Texas...you are suppose to notify the officer just like MUFFINS suggests. You can...and probably will lose the right to carry concealed if you don't notify an officer you have a weapon. If they run your name, they will see your a CHL...then you will be face down on the pavement. I have nothing to hide and I don't believe in making things stickier than needed!! I am totally a gun rights advocate...but I am also going to pick my battles!!

In my state there is no regulation that says they "shall" disclose it, however like I said there is no reason not to.
