Well, you have to run the installation twice exactly as Ford describes, but with modification to the shipped autoinstall.lst file. The reason is described earlier in this thread. If you are not confident in your ability to do this you may want to skip it. I’d hate for you to botch the procedure and have a non working head unit.
Speaking of iOS 12. This is a test to see if apostrophes are still horribly broken in the garage talk app for this web forum. A problem which began in iOS 11 for users here.

"Shortly after installation has begun, SYNC may quickly display “Installation Complete.” Ignore this message. It refers to a specific phase of the installation, not the overall update process. The system will reboot, which takes several minutes. Do not attempt to use SYNC during this time. After the system reboots, SYNC will display a pop-up requesting the owner set up Automatic System Updates, please press “Ask Me Later”."
Are you referring to this step when you say "you have to run the installation twice exactly as for describes"?

I'll give a try to explain this.
Download the update to a USB. Edit the Auto install file and insert in truck.
The first pass that was referred to is done with the Auto install file edited to read like this:
[SYNCGen3.0_3.0.18025_PRODUCT]
Item1 = HB5T-14G386-THA
Open1 = SyncMyRideHB5T-14G386-THA.tar.gz
Item2 = HB5T-14G386-TBB
Open2 = SyncMyRideHB5T-14G386-TBB.tar.gz
Item3 = GB5T-14G386-SC
Open3 = SyncMyRideGB5T-14G386-SC.tar.gz
Item4 = JR3T-14G381-AL
Open4 = SyncMyRideJR3T-14G381-AL.tar.gz
Options = AutoInstall
[SYNCGen3.0_ALL]
Item1 = JR3T-14G423-BA
Open1 = SyncMyRideJR3T-14G423-BA.tar.gz
Item2 = GB5T-14G386-AA
Open2 = SyncMyRideGB5T-14G386-AA.tar.gz
Options = Delay,Include,Transaction
After this finishes, the truck is shutoff, doors opened & closed so the system re-boots. And USB drive is removed. Go back to your laptop/desktop - plug the USB in it & change the Auto install to this:
[SYNCGen3.0_ALL]
Item1 = GB5T-14G386-SC
Open1 = SyncMyRide\GB5T-14G386-SC.tar.gz
Item2 = JR3T-14G391-BD
Open2 = SyncMyRide\JR3T-14G391-BD.tar.gz
Options = AutoInstall,Delay,Include
Go back to your truck & let the update run again.
You don't need to remove any of the files themselves, the Auto Install script only calls(installs) the files listed - any others on the USB are ignored.
Hope this helps
As far as your question above - you can consider that as the first pass.

I took CarPlay for a drive with iOS 12 today.
Google Maps on CarPlay on Ford Sync 3 sounds like the most promising upcoming navigation method at this point and I can't wait!
Apple maps is still pretty terrible mostly because of Siri's prolific stupidity, I made this video to explain partially why:
Now, before all the Android Auto users boast about Google Maps on Android Auto; here is a video I took showcasing a serious glitch in Google Maps in Android Auto which pretty much renders a key feature in Google Maps completely useless on my Nexus:
At this time both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are superior to Ford Sync 3 App Link.
I think Google Maps on Apple CarPlay will rein supreme once it is finally published.
Sygic over Ford Sync 3 App Link is the 'Bit Connect' of all infotainment Apps. Never go near it, ever!

Glad it worked for you. Many of us get MEM_ERR03 no matter what we try, hence this long thread. Running the installation in two passes gets around the problem.
