Why have a 36 gallon tank if all you need is 18 gallons? I get fuel rewards (cents per gallon off) and $0.40 per gallon is much more of a savings with 32 gallons than it is with 18 gallons.
When it's too cold or too hot outside, I get back into the truck while it is being fueled up.

No it's not, it's exactly the same savings. You get the same amount off on every gallon you buy, regardless how much you buy at a time. However, filling a 36-gallon tank to full every time means you are carrying an average of 5.5 extra gallons/38.5 extra pounds around all the time compared to the smaller tank, if you refill both when they get down to 1/4 tank. That extra weight makes some difference in your fuel mileage. I don't usually fill it up unless I'm taking a long road trip, or I expect the price of gas to go up soon (in which case I actually am saving by buying more of the cheaper gas), otherwise I fill it to between 1/2 and 3/4, about 22-24 gallons, which easily lasts me a week.
If I buy 1 gallon, I save $0.40, and my discount is gone and I pay full price for the next fill up. If I buy 30 gallons, I will save $12.00. There is also the time involved to wait in line to fill up every 10 gallons. I bought a 36 gallon tank so I can drive 600 to 700 miles and not fill up all the time.
My Bride gets fuel discounts from grocery shopping and passes them off to me. Anywhere from 10 to 60 cents off a gallon but they restrict it to 20 gallons. We also have a membership fuel program, Cumberland Farms 10 cents per gallon. Currently at $2.45, almost $90 to fill up..... I'll take the rewards savings and restrictions.

I'm lucky - the place I've been getting gas for the last 30 years is a full service station - haven't touched a gas pump in that many years.
You aren't lucky, you are dumb and it is wrong.
You have to pump gas yourself to know it's done right. You can't trust those fill-up station people. How do you even know if they used the right gas or if they even put enough gas in it!?
Just kidding, wasn't calling you dumb.
And sorry that I derailed this after yelling at myself yesterday for derailing the thread. I couldn't resist this one though.

I used to work in a full service station, when I was 16... Loved that job.. got to see cool cars up close, and talk to the owners.. got to flirt with girls up close in miniskirts too! (skirts would sometimes ride up! :O )
Was on vacation in Seattle Washington a while back.. it was totally weird to me to have someone pumping gas in my car!
