Current SYNC 3 and CarPlay/Android Auto Information
I hope I'm note the only one who is out of touch!
I have the 2016 Lariat with the two USB connections just below the radio; however, I need to be sure I understand just what is intended when you use: CarPlay, and Android.
Please give me a quick explaination of their meaning or function.

This is what I find interesting about the 2.2 release.
The software and hardware upgrade is not covered under vehicle warranty.
What is up with that? If they provide the software why is it not covered under warranty? Not speaking of us here who jumped on the unofficial release.

Since it was not released through the Ford's official channel I can see them saying that the V2.2 wont be covered under the manufacture's warranty. What's going to happen when we start noticing trucks with some type of computer glitches that are because of this boot legged copy. I'm glad that you guys got yours to works, but as a guy that spent 15 years testing DoD equipment to include software, I will just sit back and wait for Ford to release the official copy therefore if their is an issue Ford will cover it under my original warranty.
SSM 46283 - 2016 Ford And Lincoln MKX - SYNC 3 - Apple CarPlay And Android Auto Upgrade Not Currently Available
Some owners of 2016 Ford and Lincoln MKX vehicles equipped with SYNC 3 may inquire about upgrading to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This upgrade is not currently available for those vehicles. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are currently available only on vehicles equipped with SYNC 3 v2.0 or later. This upgrade for 2016 Ford and Lincoln MKX vehicles will be available in 2017. The SYNC version can be confirmed via OASIS. Monitor OASIS for future updates.
SSM 46284 - 2016 Lincoln - SYNC 3 - Apple CarPlay And/Or Android Auto - Customer Pay Upgrade Available
Some customers with 2016 Lincoln vehicles (excluding Lincoln MKX) equipped with SYNC 3 version 1.0 or 1.1 may request an upgrade to their SYNC system for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto functionality. This upgrade requires SYNC 3 version 2.2 software to be installed for both applications to function. In addition, Apple CarPlay requires a new Media Hub/Universal Serial Bus (USB) hub to be installed. For correct Media Hub/Universal Serial Bus (USB) hub part number refer to the Ford Catalog Advantage (FCA) web version of the parts catalog. The SYNC version can be confirmed via OASIS. The software and hardware upgrade is not a warranty repair per the Warranty and Policy Manual, Section 3, Warranty Coverages – SYNC.
Edit: BTW, I updated mine last night. I delete all Bluetooth devices and did a master Sync reset first. Then I followed the readme file and the upgrade went without a hitch. Many thanks to jm061 for making this possible and others for providing great tips!

Possibly some not so good news for people wanting Carplay with sync 3, at least from the dealer I bought my "white" hub from.
As of 23 Dec 2016, 0914 Eastern time:
The blue hubs are backordered, ETA unknown.
The white hubs are backordered, ETA unknown.

I was lucky and got under the wire with them as they had a few on their shelf and mailed it out yesterday. This is in Canada, States might be different. Cross your fingers if you haven't ordered one yet....
I can only speculate why they woudl be now backordered (all diverted to 2017 production, more people ordering them than they expected for normal service parts, supplier issues, etc), all I can say for sure is what my supplying dealer has told me. all they know is what the system tells them when they try to order: backordered.
Declining stock on the hubs may also explain the rollback on the ver 2.2 release date. No sense rolling out the software if you can't sell the necessary hardware. Again, only my personal speculation.
Happy holidays.

makes me wonder if Ford can step in at this point and "reserve" some portion or all of the remaining parts stock for expected "official" upgrades... especially as there starts to be a run on and CP-compliant hub. 3 places I contacted about availability all knew the part and the Lincoln substitute option as soon as I told them the part number.
I'd also expect Ford parts corporate to sell every last single one of them, as soon as they possibly can.
"Make hay while the sun shines" as it were and order more when needed.
Then they have to look at the possibility of making a big resupply order and getting stuck with excess stock that may not move for another 10 years in normal service replacement requirements.
Again, the disclaimer is this is only my personal opinion.
Personally, I say if someone is looking/wanting to "upgrade" to use carplay then just bite the bullet, pay the money and order a USB port while you can.
At least then if Ford releases ver 2.2 officially (unlikely if they can't sell you the hardware at the same time), you would have the hub already.
I'm glad I've got one on the way, but it wouldn't stop me from enjoying the truck if I didn't. I bought it for transportation, not a media experience. All I need for media is some music from time to time, a clock in the dash and to be able to talk "hands free". As long as it runs and functions properly as transportation, everything else is just a minor dissatisfier to be worked out.

Well I think I ordered Walt Sweenys last white hub, their inventory said 1 left and out of stock after my order. I was originally going to wait for the blue (have one on back order) but decided to bite the bullet and resell the white when the blue arrives.
