APIM Module replacement?
I also have problems with APIM: sometimes freezing, sometimes being unresponsive, etc. I own an F150 King Ranch, 2016, out of warranty, but I have the PremiumCare extended warranty with a $100 deductible. The dealership said that they have to check first if the software is up to date. They will charge me $165 for diagnosis, and whatever is to install the latest software. If the problems persist within 2-3 weeks, I need to get it back, and then run some more diagnostics, and only after that can they try to replace the APIM (after I pay the deductible, which may or not be waived if the service dept manager agrees to it). However, if it starts acting up in 2 months after that, they will have to run again the diagnosis at a price of $165, and start all over again. It doesn't seem to be right, as pretty soon I may be out of more money than if I just buy an APIM and install it. Any thoughts?
Thanks
PS, MyFord says that my Sync3 is up to date

I have a 2019 Expedition in the dealership now. Sync lost connectivity to phone, backup camera may or may not come on or will stay on, laggy etc. Fix is $1395 for APIM replacement. This expense on a 3-year old vehicle is ridiculous. If a wal-mart tv can last for 10yrs, why not electronics from Ford? No happy about the significant hit to the pocket book on a relatively new vehicle.
Those in this thread that have had their APIM replaced under warranty, was this done on the first dealer visit or did you have to hound them? At what point did they agree to replace?
Dropped my truck off Monday and they still haven’t looked at it but are already suggesting an update (which is not covered under my Ford extended warranty, so I’ll have to pay out of pocket for diagnosis and update). I have all of the textbook symptoms for a bad APIM and really just want to have them swap it now so I don’t have to go through this whole song and dance again. It’s a major hassle. Dealer is booking appointments about 3 weeks out, and after dropping off for the appointment, they want 3-5 days to look at it. No loaner vehicles available.

Figures. APIM replacement is covered under warranty and update is not. It’s frustrating to pay good money for an extended warranty and then have to pay out of pocket for troubleshooting before I can even use the warranty.
I believe if they try the update and it doesn’t resolve the issue the warranty will refund the charges. You will have to read the fine print to be sure, but my dealer did as my was replaced under warranty too.
You could try the update yourself . . . lots of threads on here about how to do that as well . . .
Got the call today. They claim nothing is wrong and they updated it.
I asked if they would guarantee it and refund me what they’re charging me if I have to come back for the same issues again and he told me no, so it sounds like he’s not even confident in this being the fix. Not happy.
If it works with no more bugs, that will be great, but I don’t foresee that happening. His claim from the start was that the updates were necessary because phone software is getting newer and nav maps are changing due to new roads. When I asked what that has to do with my settings resetting every power cycle he just reiterated that it will all be fixed with the update and it’s somehow all connected.

Hey there, I got a ‘18 Screw that I love but a couple days ago my door speakers stopped working. The only ones that work is the center dash one and subwoofer. Hard to tell if the A-pillar tweeters are gone.
The radio control on the steering wheel is acting funny too. Channel toggle right will toggle left a lot. Volume up will change the source (FM to Sat radio) etc. It’s F’in annoying.
In an attempt to fix it I reset the radio twice. Didn’t help.
I also unplugged the battery for about 30 minutes but that didn’t change anything either.
Since all 4 door speakers aren’t working I’m wondering if the APIM is shot or burnt out. Not too sure if that will help the steering wheel buttons though.
Any help/wisdom in this will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Todd

Surprise, surprise! Picked up the truck yesterday after the dealer fixed it with an update and drove it straight home. Just got in to head to lunch and all of the same problems are back.
Called the service advisor immediately and they are going to take the truck in on Monday to diagnose again. Service advisor already told me he would still not refund the fee I paid for the update. Safe to say once they get this sorted and I am finding a new dealer.
@Ford Motor Co. what’s the deal with the dealers giving us so much pushback with APIM replacement while under warranty? It’s a known issue. Should be cut and dry for those of us under warranty.

Can I just swap out my old IPMB unit with a new one without forscan?
I assume you are referring to a Sync 3 APIM module. If you're 100% sure that the problem is the APIM, keep an eye on the classified section of this forum and replace yourself... they come up for sale every once in awhile. It requires disassembly of part of your dash but it isn't too difficult and it'll only cost you the APIM itself. The difference in price of you doing it vs. the dealer is significant... hundreds vs. $1000. There's a handful of experts on this forum that if you buy from them, they can probably configure it for your truck based on your VIN, which avoids you having to reprogram via Forscan.
