APIM Module replacement?
#11
Hey guys,
Ive got a 2016 F150, build date in March 2016. Purchased in May and has a little over 5k on it now. Within the first 1k miles, I started having a weird issue with the audio. At times, it will be completely unresponsive to the touch screen inputs and hard button inputs. It will reset after I've shut the truck off and let it sit for 15 minutes or so. Hard & soft resets have no effect.
So I took it in today to get it checked out. The dealership is telling me that the APIM module needs replacement. If I understand correctly, this is basically the brains of the Sync system.
A few questions:
Is this common?
Where is it located?
How difficult is the repair?
And, do you believe this is actually the problem?
Thanks, mtdawg

I'm having similiar problem with my 2016 F-150. Brought it in to the dealer and they are saying the APIM needs replacing....cost about $1,000. Truck out of warranty with 42,000 miles. Any other options?? Thanks Lratcliff

This seems to be a common problem. My 2017 is going in on Tuesday to have this looked at and get the part ordered. I have no gps, bluetooth constantly disconnects, button response is very slow and a few other weird things. Dealer thinks it is the apim.

Add me to the list. I’ve been experiencing exactly the same symptoms (no gps, buttons unresponsive, backup camera not turning off, occasional black screen) and the dealer is replacing the APIM today. Fortunately, my dealership found it quickly and went directly to replacement. Hopefully the new APIM will last longer than the old one, which failed in only 20 months.

I was having similar issues, mine were completely random and inconsistent. I could drive to work and not have any issues, leave to go to lunch and bluetooth audio not work, Nav not work, and even if I tried plugging my phone in via USB, it would say media device not available. I also occasionally experienced the phone seemed to be connected, the album artwork would appear, and the timer on the song would be ticking by both on my screen and my phone, but no sound would come out. However, it never had an issue bluetooth phone calls, which I found extremely odd... could not stay connected for bluetooth to play a song, but rock solid if someone called me???
I tried updating, reinstalling the software, several master resets, tried different phones, erased any connection between the phone and the sync and repaired from scratch, tried resetting the APIM, charged the battery, left the battery disconnected over night, etc etc... Nothing ever seemed to make a difference... Finally bit the bullet and got a new APIM installed, and now everything is running great. I bought my truck used, so I did not have experience before it failed, but all the functions seem smother and response times to touches are vastly improved as well.
I can't remember who, but someone offered me a APIM for about $650 programmed to my vin, but I ended up getting the dealer to do it for me, as they owed me from a prior experience, and did not charge me labor, and the APIM was the same cost from them

New APIM and now all is well. Added CarPlay upgrade/media ports at same time ... its like a completely different system now. Snappy, better search, different nav voice ... plus all the CarPlay functionality. I assume what I see now is what the 2018 owners see.

I have a Sync 3 Nav APIM and a HD radio for sale.
Originally came out of a 2015 Mustang, was then in my 2016 F150 before I traded it.
Updated to sync ver 3.0.
You must know how to activate them using Forscan.
Asking $600 for the pair.

I tried updating from SYNC 3 v1.0 to 2.3 and got wacky results (it said it was successful - displays v2.3 on the "About" screen) including the "Voice Recognition not ready" message when pressing the sync button on the steering wheel. Took it to the dealer this morning and they were quick to diagnose the problem - APIM module requires replacement. I just bought this truck CPO (fortunately) so all covered under warranty. They said the APIM module is on backorder and will probably take a few weeks. Will update here once that happens to let you know if that resolves my truck's issue(s).
