Im speaking from experience on this as I changed my gate over to a step gate.

Added the step in tailgate option to my 2020 XLT build sheet order. Have used it since September and although useful, it is extremely heavy and bothersome to pull out, put back in and keep clean so it doesn't bind up.

I would keep one or two folding heavy duty step stools in the bed. Walmart or Amazon sells them for $12 - $18.

I have used mine for 4.5 yrs. with no issues at all, and my aluminum tailgate with the step is the same weight as my steel tailgate on my Super Duty.

Added the tailgate step to my 2020 XLT build sheet. Use it all the time have no problems with it and couldn't live without it now. Absolutely love it!

I bought my 2014 from dealer inventory and it happened to have the tailgate step. I had never used one before but It quickly became a must have for me on all future trucks. I ordered my 2017 and 2020 with the tailgate step. It was a little under $400 option on 13th gens. It went up to $430 on 14th gens but it also includes the tailgate work surface. Sounds like a lot of money but it was well worth it to me. Kind of like buy once cry once. Because it's much cheaper than trying to add it after the fact.

So to be clear, I have no regrets ordering the step tailgate. I just think trying to find one for those who don't could be quite expensive.

Step stool is a cheap and easy alternative.

Yes, the '15 tailgate will work on a '20 year model. Only difference is the '18+ have F150 stamped into the tailgates

The tailgate with the step on my 2020 is a bit heavier than my prior 2018 without. Its one of those options I never wanted but now I don't think I can live without.
