Adding Tailgate step
I can tell you it is still two different tailgates. As stated before, the outer shell is thw same but that is all. Both steps even use different hinges since the 15+ step gate has a torsion rod in it to assist with lifting.
Im speaking from experience on this as I changed my gate over to a step gate.

My ‘15 Lariat didn’t have the step. Never bothered me. My ‘16 Platinum has one. The tailgate is way heavier with it. I have never used it other than to show people. For me it’s quicker and easier to just swing my knee up on the tailgate and jump on up. Takes me 2 seconds.
Honestly I’d probably prefer not having it. I wouldn’t trade unless it was an ingot silver Platinum tailgate tho.

Love my tailgate step, but as mentioned throughout this thread, it cannot be added unless you swap out the tailgate with one from a wrecked or parts truck.
I have many lower body injuries from a huge auto accident a couple years ago, and getting into the bed is very tough (impossible if I am tired) without the step. With the step, it’s still not a breeze but is much easier. For me, it’s well worth the added weight.

@KamBc, the part number I used was FL3Z-99430B39-B
