Default Why'd I get a 111 code?

I know that means "System Pass" but here's the deal:

I started, or attempted to, the truck this morning but it took 4 tries before it actually starting running. Each time it would crank and crank and then sputter a bit and stall. The 4th time, it started and idled but barely. When I would hit the gas it would stumble really bad but once it got to about 2,500 rpm it would seem fine. I drove it about 30 miles and it was o.k. except one time it "hiccuped" but, that was it.

When I got home I let it cool off completely. Several hours later I went out with my trusty Rotunda Stars II scanner and did both a KOEO and KOER test. Both of them produced only a 111 code! I checked the codes twice to be sure. Sure enough, both KOEO and KOER both only produced a 111 with no continuous codes.

My only guess is something ignition related. Distributor, coil, TFI. It has been running like it's on a bit of tread mill lately. Kinda like a miss or weak spark or something but, that it. I still have my Mallory Distributor and Coil and my Taylor Thunder Volt 8.2's and a new set of Motorcraft Copper Cores sidegapped to .056 ready to go maybe I should just put that stuff on and see if it comes back?!

Any ideas?

Should I worry about it or just drive the damn thing?

i had a problem similar to that and it turned out that one of my spark plug wires was crap.

The computer isn't seeing a problem. Usually a tune up type item, or something the computer doesn't watch.

I realize it's something the computer isn't watching or I would've got a code.

More specifically my question should be:

What system could cause this issue in which the computer does NOT monitor?

*UPDATE* - I drove it again this evening, short trip to the local gas station, it fired right up, and ran great. I'm still thinking it's an ignition type of problem. It just "seemed" like it this morning when it was acting up.....

Yeah, tune up items. Fuel pressure could be low. Coil could be weak. I would check the fuel pressure.

One or more sensor still w/ in parameters, but high or low in range. Some Valves/ solenoids/ actuators dirty / worn, or out of tolerances. Power/ ground problem. I just replaced my POS & NEG battery cables & my engine started better & it seemed to cure a few minor quirks including my idle quality, which wasn't bad, but made me "think" my plugs might be due. I would toss in a bottle of Lucas injector cleaner, clean battery terminals/connections, clean IAC, inspect EGR, bench check TFI, suspect ignition system components. Maybe a bad batch of gas. & as mentioned, fuel pressure.

Looks like I'll be digging into this ignition system this weekend. I'll put my new distributor, coil, plugs and wires on and see what happens.

Ironicly enough, about a week ago I cleand the IAC and EGR. Removed them both gave em' a good soaking and put em' back on. Plus I Seafoamed through the brake booster vacuum line at the same time. I run Lucas Injector Cleaner with every tank so that's not a problem.

Maybe this is also a good time to do a compression test and get some numbers on my fuel system, including leak down.

I'll keep ya's posted.

Thanks for the idea's and insight so far....

Oh,.....so now the plot thicken! Not unusual for a "clinger" to dislodge & foul a plug after a Seafoam adventure. Probably not actually necessary regarding this, but compression test results (written down somewhere / ea. cylinder) are good to have for future reference. For the heck of it, do wet too if your going to do it. Something nice about an engine that's well taken care of, this will most likely be something very minor in nature!

By the way, not to change the subject, but yesterday after loading 40 sheets of plywood into my truck & marveling at the ease the truck was handling it, I goosed it a little coming away from a stop & spit 30+ sheets out in the lane behind me like spreading a deck of cards. Atlantic Blvd. & Pacific Coast Hwy. That was fun!

sounds like my problem... new tfi didnt fix it. tried a new coil, but before i could get it in, as i was looking at the bank before i went the parts store (and i even have bad eyes!), truck died in the middle of the road. couldn't restart this time, killed the battery, had to get a tow home. gotta find a jump or ride the bus to autozone to charge my battery tomorrow...
