Default Possible timing issue.. Or?

I will start by introducing myself and my truck, My name is Dustin and I have A 1989 F-150 with a 4.9 5spd and 4x4. Well I got it in fix-er-up shape a few weeks ago and worked out several bugs it had. But I still have a remaining problem. When I start it theres a miss in it until I get up and going then its never heard again, but the check engine light is on and sometimes it flashes but there is no rhythm, its just random. I drive it up a mountain every night on my way home from work and it boggs down bad enough to where 3rd gear is needed... sometimes 2nd, but if I hold it for a while over about 2200-2500 rpm straining its bucks hard and if I hit the clutch it just dies but has no problems staring back up. Any suggestions? I think it may be a spark or timing issue, Maybe trash in the fuel tank as i know for a fact theres some in the front tank(I just always use the back). Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Judging By what i've found on other forums I have EGR problems it seems ( If 4.9s are equipped with EGR) . What is the Best way to go about fixin it? Code 84 says EGR circuit failure or something like that.

I'd start by checking for power at the solenoid.

I have the same starting issue, I too have the 4.9L I6 but I have a 1992 F150 2WD manual, I hope everything works out okay. With mine, sometimes it will start right up and others it wont.

Sounds to me like if the light pops on and off and with bucking and lack of power like that, you may have a bad spark plug wire. I had one and it did something similar. It took forever to figure it out.
