That almost looks like part of the evap system for the emissions,mine looks like a bigger version of the vacuum canister,can u get another one,

The air that comes out of it does it smell like gas,exhaust or clean air? I will look at mine tomorrow and see if I can trace where that goes,it looks familiar, just can't remember exactly what or where it is,I will try tonight actually,maybe someone else would know in the short term,I can look into it for u if u want,?

It comes right off the smog pump... can I just put hose in its place?

They must have changed the design of it,but ya u could just run a hose,I would get a crankcase vent filter to put on the end to filter out the dirt and water,on mine that's what the can does is filter out the **** the pump sucks in,....I don't know if this has crossed our mind but I've been thinking about putting a ton the smog pump intake and plumbing my crankcase vent to it so I'm not sucking that crap into the motor,it will keep the pump lubed too,lol..thought of putting a oil catch can in the middle some where too,but any way ya a hose should work as long as it has a filter,try pulling one off of a 95,if u can,should cost less then 20 bucks and would look right,not cobbled ya know.

Is that on the EGR line after the solenoid or manifold vacuum.

It looks like its just a muffler for the secondary air system. It shouldn't effect driveability but a leak will effect preheating and cold start when the air system is active. After warm up it just blows unused air to atmosphere anyway.

OK that doesn't tell you if the EGR is activating or not. That is just manifold vacuum. Looks about normal for manifold.
