You can get a lot better use out of the $22 than a handheld scanner that does little more than a paperclip. Spend the money on a Mitchell manual on eBay instead. That will give you the precise troubleshooting procedures for the codes rather than just a listing of their title.

I'm sorry, was that supposed to be a useful post, pithy comeback, etc?

I provided the OP with solid information. The code scanner is NOT REQUIRED to get the codes from the computer. Any jumper wire can do that. The same cash can be spent to purchase a book with hundreds of logical troubleshooting sequences to accurately resolve problems without throwing parts at it in the faint hope of getting it right. Was there something specific you found dumb about that suggestion, or do you just not like disagreement?

Amazon Amazon

There's one for $5. Fantastic documentation that far exceeds anything you'll find in a Haynes/Chiltons etc manual.

You have a point. But $20 is nothing comparatively, if it saves him from miscounting flashes that send him on a wild goose chase, even once. The user manual that come w/ it is worth $20 by itself. Detailing proper code reading procedures.
