Thinking
I'm pretty surprised it didn't get tipped in the high winds myself.
Hell, if it was me at that point and I was super nervous, I might even backup and reset (start from scratch). That's the most sure way. You have backups, right?
Data not backed up is useless.
Barring that, yes, reset all your firewall rules and close any ports / security holes and do a very thorough scan for residual malware. Never have more than one firewall and or malware program running at the same time. They will collide with each other and cause problems.

Anyway, I preach making backup to everyone in the family/friends as I'm usually the go to for these problems, yea can you believe that ? But screwed myself because I upgraded that comp to W10 pro and quit making backups just before I did that. So my last was W7 just before updtaing to 10. I planned on a clean copy of 10 in the future, even have spare SSD's on hand for both my comps. At this point, I won't be satisfied with nothing other than a fresh install, so I may have to purchase the upgrade to avoid ODing on the Advil. Iduno, just starting and I know where to go for updated info...just got this fired, making sure it's secure at the moment.
Also you are exactly correct Martian, - it's nothing but ransomeware. Can't believe it took so long to click. Read about, heard about it. I was in a hurry downloading the weed eater manual, was running up to home depo, wanted to make sure I had the correct spark plug in the weed eater and just looking for that info lol. So I didn't exercise caution what so ever. Just click click and waited for the manual. It didn't work so went to another site for it and got it right away.
Well, this comp is running fine, thanks for the wake-up.
BTW- after 20 minutes on the phone with the enemy, they mentioned a 299 fee. At that point it clicked, then they knocked it down to 99. Gave them small lecture, then a different lady said to me with accent, (it may have been russian come to think of it, the first lady as well, more Eastern Ukraine, she had a problem with the F words ) that I would only have the ability to look at pictures from a camera on my computer without our help lol.
Anyway wish me luck lol.

Brew....you are so right about them being convincing. I had the very same issue. After about 5 minutes of this guy, I finally asked, Microsoft?? I thought this was Windows. He said he was "Microsoft" and didn't respond to the Windows reference. I hung up and did a master reset of my Windows 7 machine. It took some time to get the stuff I used back right, but overall, it was worth the reset. It has become faster, easier to handle. It does have one glitch I haven't reset, but I only see it every so often. I'll clear it next time, I just haven't cared until recently. Waiting for it to pop up as I type. lol
Good luck with your reset or whatever you decide to do. I've been there, so you have my sympathy and support.

I use to use a MAC and PC. During the problems erra it came in handy. Slowly merged to just using PC's. Gave my brother the big MAC DT and he's still using it lol. Very nice machine.
They haven't been back, what I have to keep in mind, I gave these people remote access for a time, that's a pretty large mistake if you carry personal data on anything on line. I don't. Still living sort of dangerously at the moment, - as far protecting the system anyway. You know about remote access I presume. After wiping temps I copied first registry changes then wiped. These people are much smarter than I as they train themselves, you know what I mean. Just doing the little that I know currently while hitting the books so to speak.
