I don't think that you can tell a LD from HD fan clutch in our years. They all used the same basic size and configuration. The difference was the inside mechanism. Aftermarket has both "thermal" and "non-Thermal" styles available. I'll stick with the "thermal" ones, as that is what the 98 and newer have. I don't know what your 97 has for a style. It shows as only a one year part.
The fan clutch was most definitely my issue, you called it. The radiator being full of calcium didn't help either, but now when I start it the fan comes on. It wasn't doing that before and I just didn't notice it even though it always had. I think I'm going to try a 180 thermostat and see if I can drop maybe 10 degrees, I don't thing that'll have too much of an effect on the engine management. Either way, as is, the truck is so much better. I pulled 18 mpg average on my way home this afternoon in 100 degree temps without the AC on doing 45-65 and some stop lights in the way. I've never seen that kind of mileage.
Yeah.... mine is going to be mostly a winter and hauling truck pretty soon here. I can't justify 6 gallons of gas per day getting to and from work, LOL. But, I am going to see if the e-fan will help me out. The Taurus fan is what I used on my Stang, and it has done wonders for it.

I'm doing the Cougar fan in my truck.
If I remember correctly, the guys that have gone efan in cooler environments see noticeable improvements with power and mileage. Flex-a-lite makes probably the sweetest setup that's direct bolt in. Only problem is the 1300 dollar price tag!
Well.... it appears I sold the house again. Winds up being a little less than the other offer, but this one appears more promising. No state funded housing this go around.
EDIT: Also took the old pickup through the canyon tonight (the canyon that the new house is close to). This picture just doesn't do justice, but I only got this one pic.
Ohhh..... and I washed the Stang finally, LOL.

Here we are talking about radiators, and low and behold, the one in the Fusion gave up the ghost. It started leaking at the cooler. Next thing the kid knew, the damn thing was spraying water on the engine.
I went and bought a new radiator for $115 ($225 at Autozone with the same part number). Had it brought home on a slideback, and started to take things apart. This car is NOT a field fix automobile. lol. It is a literal PIA to work on. You should see the procedure of replacing the water pump. Please Ford. Pull your head out of your rectum. This is an engineering nightmare to work on. I don't say much bad about Ford, but they shagged the pooch on this one. Luckily the water pump is fine. Whew.
You have to disassemble the front of the car to replace the radiator. I'm going to try what a buddy at Ford told me to try. The upper core support is clipped on and if you pop it right, it comes off easy he said. I've never worked on the 3.o other than replace the power steering valve. Even that is remove the inner liners and part of the front end panels. ggggggeeeerrrrr!!!! Oh well, I'll get it done tomorrow. Rant over. lol

Hey.......NO PARKING on the lawn.
Nice wilderness and not too far away for you to go. kewl.
Dang AK... that sounds like a big pain in the rump. I was looking at the rad in my Escape, and it looks like a bunch of fun too. It is also tucked under the core support.... or at least that's what I am gathering your Fusion is like. I also cussed Ford for the t-stat location on the Escape.... but that is probably a Mazda design as I recall. I had to pull the AC compressor for it.
The worst rad I've done was my 94 Cadillac STS. Had to rip all kinds of crap out to get that thing out of there.
