I did a radon test on the homestead. The results came back yesterday...
So, naturally I call the place for a bid. They want $1800 to come out and put in a mitigation system. I'm an inquisitive bastard, so I start asking questions. They are basing their "you need a mitigation system above 2.7 pci/l" claim based off of WHO figures. The EPA recommends it at 4.0 pci/l. I then ask "how bad is a measurement of 5.0? - and what is the highest number you've seen?" He says the highest I've seen is 120 pci/l, and the home is considered uninhabitable at 100 pci/l. Sooooo, my house really isn't bad at all is basically what he told me.
Have any of you had any experience with radon / radon mitigation systems? It looks like something I could do myself for the most part (if needed). But hell, I don't know.
EDIT: I will also add that I've read SEVERAL people saying the numbers are blown out of proportion on how much it actually affects humans, etc. I'm damn near tempted to run another test through another lab and see if it comes back the same.

It's a cement floor. Apparently it "seeps" through the concrete. No holes anywhere. In fact, mitigation requires a 6 inch hole to be cut through the concrete, 15 gallons of dirt removed, and a vacuum applied to the new cavity. I'm not really all that pleased with the sounds of that. It is then exited outside, and above the roofline. There will be a motor running 24/7. I'm almost thinking of not doing it if it's up to me. My better half might want to do mitigation though... so we'll see.
IMO i would get it done, i might be a little biased because of what both my parents careers were but I know when i bought my house, my parents were ready to rake me over the coals if i said no to a radon test
I have a radon mitigation system here, White, and most homes in this area do since we're built on decomposed granite. I've never done a test to see what levels are, I just trust that it's doing its job. (I've sometimes thought about turning it off for a week, then doing a test, but never wanted to spend/waste(?) the money.)
The motor running 24/7 is no big deal, and it's really very quiet.
we are actually pretty close on the numbers. One thing that might work to my advantage is I shopped around, and have a few different trade numbers, some higher than what they appraised mine at
I didn't realize that Ben lives in Payson. He's only about an hour and 15 away from me. My Wife's uncle and aunt lives up there by him.... in the city part.
