The Motorcraft /Bosch shouldn't have that problem in these trucks. My guess would be must a pore reman or cheap replacement was swapped in there at one time.

Yes, when trying to start (and no, I'm 100% sure it's not already running).

As DJ said, either starter or flexplate. These are not nearly as bad as the GM (Chevy) engines when it comes to breaking the flexplate, but it does happen on the modulars too.

I'm betting on a bad flexplate, either broken or damaged teeth. It wouldn't be the first, and wouldn't be the last modular V8 to have that happen.

It's only happened twice since March and I don't drive it very much, so I'm content to ride it out for a bit. I'm guessing I'll need to pull the starter and turn the engine by hand to look for broken/worn teeth, and if none, it's the starter?

If it is the flexplate, that means dropping the trans to replace it?

Correct, trans has to come out

Tailgate bushings bought and installed.
Bolts lined with 1/2" pvc and installed
Lubed up the whole thing.
Tailgate lines up with body lines again and works like new.
Mission accomplished.
Thanks to all that gave me info and ideas.
Now playing with grandkids at the pool.

Lol. I wouldn't worry about the flex plate.
