I did it to mine as well, and I agree with Bigred, combined with the Gotts mod, I definitely noticed an improvement. I did mine at the same time, so I can't say exactly what improvement one gave me over the other.
But it is free, so why not do it? It can only help.

I removed my silencer and did the Gotts mod at the same time. I'm happy I did it. The Gotts mod was really simple, but the silencer removal was a bit of a pain because I didn't have a dremel or other rotary tool so I had to improvise.
I'm assuming you have read the tutorial that is out there. If not, Google it (I'm feeling kinda lazy and don't wanna track down the link). You seemed a little confused as to what and where it is so....... It is basically just a plastic tube that is on the very inside of your air intake and it restricts the air flow going in to the engine. It is located under the accordian piece of rubber on your intake. The tutorial will tell you how to remove it.
When I did the two mods together I noticed a crisper throttle response, better fuel economy, and I can hear the intake of the engine more. If I had an exhaust system on my truck I think it would have improved it even more. Don't expect crazy power improvements out of it, but I highly doubt many of the HP increases these CAI companies claim to get by switching to their intake anyways so I see it as an acceptable and cheap CAI. My Gryphon tuner tells me that my intake air temp is the same as ambient temp, so I don't see how a CAI that draws in hot air from inside the engine compartment is going to do any better. I would recommend going to a high flow air filter like the K&N or something along those lines while you're at it though.

The gotts mod was FREE for me. I just used an empty brake fluid can with the ends cut off for the tubing, even larger inner diameter than the pvc. And to seal it to the air-cleaner housing I just used some black tape I had lying around.
