and I did the gotts intake mod. I never got a new filter because I didn't want to use an oiled one, but couldn't find a dry filter that was reusable.

For me, paper filters make more sense. I drive ~7000 miles/year, so a $10 filter every 3-4 years would take at least 18 years to make up for the cost of a dry filter.
Even the closed box Volant doesnt run to the fenderwell so you will still be pulling air from the engine compartment. I would keep your K&N tube if its the plastic version. Just use the stock filter box and do the Gotts mod. AFE and Airaid both make a drop in dry element filter. I have a Airaid currently in my truck. I have a AFE sitting on the shelf when its time to clean the Airaid.
Then you either modify the other side by cutting that as well or make a sleeve that tapers down to the second opening hole giving you access to the fender-well. Which is what I did for the Volant. I wanted to keep the outer circle a circle. So I could also run my factory box w/gotts mod and extension as well. I 'm not sure what you meant by posting "Even the closed box Volant doesnt run to the fenderwell so you will still be pulling air from the engine compartment" because none of them do. You would have to modify the Volant just as you would anything else.
