Didn't mean to start a war I know CAI is a sensitive topic! I've decided to stay with the k&N tube. I wonder if it is at all possible to replace the oil filter with a dry element filter? Just thinking out loud

So which Ford truck, 97-03 doesn't have a CAI stock ? Like I said (not sure how you missed it?), this was something Ford supplied..factory. You get what I'm saying ?

Right, I agree. My Volant set ups have been by far the best, and I've been thru MANY in the past. This is one of the maintenance free set up's. By maintenance free I mean the filter does not get dirty and the MAF NEVER gets compromised. Not since I've been running it anyway (from 2008). Encased is a AMSOIL nano fiber filter dry element. It's a 100,000 mile filter. Dirt doesn't embed as it falls off after shutdown.
This is also a direct Cold Air Intake, as most, if not all intakes take air from the inner fender cavity. That's not a true CIA IMO. Since that cavity routes to the engine compartment, more so,- a direct path to fan and radiator. This is why temps aren't much different vs just an open intake. A well known tuner (Mike Troyer) proved true way back when. That was without the extension tho. You need to extend your intake pipe thru the second hole past the fender cavity. Granted, this hasn't been talked about in the past, ever lol and this is as far as I went with it. What I haven't done is monitor IAT/temp differences as I'm currently without those capabilities.

If someone with those capabilities (like say Carcrazygts2) who had an interest in this might see cooler temps when monitoring. Personally I'm interested and it would be sort of fun determining BUT, I'm in the middle of restoring my 98, so it's going to be awhile for me to do something like that.

Anyway, some pics. This is a couple with the factory box integration/pie extension, -

Yeah I think the volant would solve his problems. Enclosed box, dry filter, and bigger intake tube for more air flow. That's a win, win all across the board.

Even the closed box Volant doesnt run to the fenderwell so you will still be pulling air from the engine compartment. I would keep your K&N tube if its the plastic version. Just use the stock filter box and do the Gotts mod. AFE and Airaid both make a drop in dry element filter. I have a Airaid currently in my truck. I have a AFE sitting on the shelf when its time to clean the Airaid.
