Default Projectors

which projectors would yall recommend and from where? i want a black housing and non halo. i think those halos look ridiculous lol.

and as for hids, do i need the hi/lo or is the single fine? i have a hi/lo in my mustang but its just for inspection purposes, so im guessing its the same for the truck.

If you go with aftermarket housings (the cheaper/easier way) you will have two different bulbs. The bulbs may actually be the same, but they will function separately as hi/lo. Thus, your low beam (used 99% of the time) will be the HID projector and the high beam will be halogen. Personally I want the same thing, no ricer halo, with projector low beam.

There is the problem though, most of the aftermarket projector housings are designed to use halogen bulbs. So using a HID bulb wouldn't be "as good" as it would be in a proper HID projector housing. This is where you will find some trolls who are diehard projector fans, and will bash anyone who has common sense and a budget.

Simply put... You can use AM projectors, if you can find them DESIGNED to use HID it's all the better. Will it be all fancy and look like a Mercedes coming down the road? No, but you didn't spend $600 and 5+ hours on a "proper" retrofit job and it STILL looks incredibly better than stock (or HID in stock).

So, if anyone can chime in with a set of aftermarket housings, with projector lenses DESIGNED for HID, I am all ears. I don't need the diehards lecturing me about the importance of doing it right with a retrofit. I understand it, and still choose not to. Please post pics.

**I am not trying to bash anyone here, I just don't care to hear it again. It's a dead horse. If you did a retrofit, sweet, if you have useful information about some projectors that don't require 5+ hours and hundreds of dollars that are quality please chime in.

No such thing exists. Bummer, I know.

Then don't use HIDs, stick to halogen.

Dont worry I won't sit here and lecture you about whats right since you clearly already know, but what you are looking for simply doesn't exist.

However, I have an alternative for you. Yes its a retrofit, no its not $600+. And its EASY. The Mini H1 projector is a sweet little unit that bolts right into the factory housing. You will have to open up the headlights like I did for the retro-fit, but you wont have to do any cutting with the dremel and that stuff. Open the headlights, bolt the projectors in, aim them, reseal the lights and you're done. The Mini H1 full kit is only $270 on TRS, and if you dont mind a microscopic (invisible from more than 6" away) blemish on the projector, the kit can be had for $220. Use your stock headlights for the retrofit. Nowhere near $600 needed for this and performance is excellent. If I had known about the mini H1 I would have done this, much easier than all the cutting I had to do.

Get the H13 adapter plate with the H13 harness, and its literally a plug and play retro-fit. The bulb shield on the stock headlights is held in with a phillips screw so its simple to remove.

Hope this helps.

I had projectors and did my research, I couldn't find a housing that was compatable with hids. I thought I wouldn't mind but I did. Went back to stock and went with hids. Had both single and dual beams, I recommend the duals. You never know when you are going to need some extra light. The only issue I have had with them is when I run my fog lights, and flick the high beams on, they stay on. I have to turn off the fog lights to get back to standard brightness. Not a lot of info but I hope it helps.

Thank you for the insightful response, definitely a relief to have someone who will answer the question without strong-arming their own personal views. Sadly, I am currently using HID's in the stock housings. What changed for me was that I did a retrofit on my GF's car - a 2006 Tiburon - with a 3" HID lens rather than the halogen lens. The results were just stunning, even with the housing being OEM. This is what more or less put me on a quest to find the best solution within reason.

So with the Mini projector in the OEM housing can be adapted to work with a H13 bulb? If at all possible could you also explain to me how to take the lens off of the housing, and how to put it back on? IF I do this (without paying someone to do it) I want to make sure I know exactly what I'm doing before I ever start.

Preferably, would you or do you know anyone who would be willing to do the retrofit? As I am edgy about this sort of thing, and hate the thought of screwing something up to the point of no repair. I would much more prefer to pay someone to do it, than do it myself even with knowledge.

I went the retrofit way getting everything I needed from TRS...projectors, hid lights and ballast, wiring and hardware for 270$ shipped and did it all in my stock housing...took me about 3 hours from start to finish...I used a heat gun and would work my way around the light breaking little sections loose at a time with a flat head or a knife...I have heard you can bake them in the oven at like 300 degrees for like 7-8 minutes but was a little nervous about melting my whole light...with a heat gun be careful because you can go through the housing bc the plastic backin gets hot as well...once you get the housing separated there are two little torque bit screws..undo those and pull the chrome out...once again be gentle because there are little tabs that will break..if they do break it's no biggie..they will go back together but the chrome piece will be a little loose even with the screws...the projector come with threaded backs and a couple of ways to mount...that's just a trial and error process as far as I'm concerned...I would recommend adjusting the lights before putting it all back together because your cut off lines can look funky and become a pain to try and adjust once reassembled...put everything back together just the way you took it apart...when you get back to needing to seal the clear lense to the housing I have seen people use silicone...I used rvt that people use as gasket seal...it's silicon but it come black and looks a lot better then clear silicone....I didn't have any problem with mine and have done about a dozen of them for other people around my area...I believe the website is sickhids.com for a guy that does them also and isn't to badly priced...i hope I could help..if you wanna know anything else feel free to ask..good luck

It is not a H13 bulb, the Mini H1 kit uses an H1 bulb. But the kit comes with a harness that is plug and play to our factory harness, its very simply to install. As for getting the lights apart, you can definitely use a heat gun as the member above posted. I used the over method (preheat to 250, turn OFF the over, stick light in for 7-8 minutes, then use a flathead screw driver and gently pry them apart as the glue should be warm and mushy). When you put it back on, use a butyl product like the 3M butyl rolls. Excellent stuff. I do know some people who would be willing to do it for pay, you can either PM me or browse through hidplanet.com forums, there are subforums for people who retrofit for a good price.

I have a mini H1 kit arriving tomorrow, I can post some pictures so you get a better idea of how it bolts in and hooks into the factory harness.

Well... I found the mini kit w/ shrouds for a measly $125 with free shipping (from reliable source, so don't worry). If that is all I need then I might just get a second pair of HLs to try it with so I don't chance it with mine.
