Looking for performance built engine help
Hi, I recently w as told its the beginning of the end for my motor at 171k miles and it a 5.4 3v from an '08 Lariat. Something about no oil pressure when the engine gets hot enough, and doesnt idle well. I do love my truck and am willing to start with a rebuilt performance enhanced or based motor, maybe one that can handle a supercharger no problem. Anybody here that help me find what I'm looking for??? Thanx in advance!!!
Something seems wonky with that answer... Do a timing rebuild on it (about $3,000 if shopped out) and you'll be golden. It might need a new oil pump, but my guess is the VCT solenoids are going out (which can actually be replaced for a couple hundred). Who told you it was nearing death?
I did my own rebuild for around $1500 in parts. It was a pain, but it was fun to do (at times at least... Lol) I got a lot more familiar with the engine.

Yeah I'd get a second opinion with someone who is familiar with the 5.4 3v and see what they say. Only in a very rare case is the engine a total loss. Mine was fixed and fixed right for about $3000 and it runs like new. Someone just doesnt want to do the work. Its your money though.
Shopping around on parts and tools, I re-built my valvetrain/timing & oil pump for about $1,200. If it's a top-end oil issue, get all that sorted out and things will be fine.
If you lost the crank thrust bearing, that's a different matter, but it's also much more rare.
If you really want to re-build for performance, I hope your wallet is up to it.

Thanks again for the responses, im sure you all speak of the likely, are these repairs you all speak of long term? I have a vortech intercooled supercharger system in the garage waiting to go in and I just wanna make sure Im good for the long term haul. I recently got high flow exhaust system all squared cats and muffler, i like the lsd and gears my lariat got factory. I didnt see much on aftermarket heads and intake etc....i did see cams but read little to no gains from what i seen. Anything good anybody have to say to my curiosity?
Yes the repairs are usually good for the Long haul but if you're planning on putting a fair amount of money like that into the engine it wouldn't hurt to go with a reman that will have all new components in it. The timing repair would be good but you never know when something else already worn from the miles on the old engine could give out. That's my two cents.

) The repairs would keep it running for tens to hundreds of thousands of more miles. Definitely long term as some has been redesigned. I would still get a second opinion. If the engine is fine I'd go ahead and boost it. Then when/if it blows do the engine internals. The first guy could just be trying to scare you into letting him put a reman engine in it.Oh, and I almost cammed my '07 5.4, and came across the same info. MAYBE 20hp at the wheels, wasn't worth the money imo.

You make a good point. It'd be a shame to boost it and throw a bearing. You'd probably be fine, but if you're going for performance then I'd either rebuild that engine or get a reman. (5.0 coyote swap with whipple?

This was an option I had considered for my truck if the occasion presented itself.

I upgraded to a 16 f-150 w/ 5.0 coyote.

Go test drive one. Lol. They're awesome, I upgraded to a '16 5.0 coyote. If you could effectively swap one in it'd be unique and a huge performance increase. The engine makes 385hp at 5,750RPMs. If you throw a whipple on it I've seen people making 650hp at the wheels. Lol. A full engine swap and getting all the electronics to work would be very expensive though. A guy did it in an Explorer Sport Trac and dropped about $20,000 to make it work. Lol. I'd stick with a crate engine 5.4 and supercharge it.
