You could make this for $5.00... I went to a junkyard and bought a shock and mounts from a wrecked truck with a flat fiberglass topper. I didn't use it for this, but for a tilt for my snowmobile trailer to keep it up. They wanted $45.00 for the kit... I paid $5.00 plus 4 self tapping screws

This video right here is about the coolest tailgate opener ever. A member named BrainDonor fitted this on his rig, It is also made by EZdown. He post's more on the "other" site.

I've got one, works awesome. Could you make it yourself, sure. Will it fit and clear, the tailgate cables and latch, who knows. The bracket that holds it is very well built and allows easy removal of the tailgate. I doubt sheet metal screws would last more than a couple of times here with the forces at play. My tailgate has the built in step and is extremely heavy, this handles it no problem.

He's half way there, replace the strut with a linear activator and you'll never have to open the tailgate again!

I have two, one on my 08 and one on my 09. Got them off cragslist new for 24.99. They were brand new in the box. You just have to look around for good deals.. I love them, no more tailgate slamming down when your hands are full..
