Sync Text Messages
I borrowed my dads Galaxy S3 this weekend and was able to get it to work with no issue.
There is a work around to get iPhones (4S and 5) to receive text messages.

If your phone doesn't have the option to "Show Notifications" you have to go through the process in the link above (post 39) and it will work. I did it, and my 2013 F150 will now read incoming text messages. I use Siri to send messages.
For those having issues with text messages on the iPhone not showing up on MFT try this on the iPhone:
1. Settings
2. Bluetooth
3. SYNC
4. Turn on 'Show Notifications'
This worked for my old iPhone 4 and my new iPhone 5 on my 2013 F-150.
Your mileage may vary.

Definitely worked after trying this method! Not sure if the release of 6.1 helped but its working now. Now if only I could have time to figure out how to send messages back....
Thanks!

I don't have that option to turn on the "notifications" either on my iPhone 4 and I updated to the 6.1 iOS a few days ago. I don't really care whether the text pops up or not cause it's not that big of a deal to me.
But I will admit it is nice to know when I get a text cause if my phone is hooked up through Sync, then it's silent when going off, except for the phone calls and it's annoying to see you got a text 15 minutes ago vs. when it comes in right away.

I've attached a print screen from my iPhone 5 with iOS 6.1 so people can see what the setting looks like.
