Default Sled pulling

I was thinking of trying sled pulling at a local fair just for the fun of it. I was going to do 1st gear with 4x4 low but should I use the electric lock for the rear diff or just leave it open? Also any other tips I should know?

A win would be nice but I highly doubt it with a stock truck. I am not going to push it, if it starts to hop I will let off right away.

you may want to try 2nd gear low range lock the diff. Set the hook high on the truck for more lift on the front of the sled. Make sure the clevis is adjustable so you can move it to the top of without being to high. I think it's a 3 inch clevis at least now for the hook size. You want wheel speed, to much traction breaks parts. Worst case you snap a drive shaft yoke, u joint. Ive seen a couple of our trucks pull they don't hop much at all. It's going to feel a lot worse in the cab vs how much wheel hop is actually happening if any. Keep your foot into until the red flag.

A win is far off because people love to cheat in stock classes tuners exhaust lift's tires traction bars blah blah blah. Do it for fun and just enjoy the thrill of it. If you don't break it's a good day overall.

get wheel speed right off the line build rpm's fast because the weight move's quick and you don't want to bog down right away. Don't stop the truck with the brakes because the sled will slam into you. most of all have fun with it.

this is blackstock ford in ontaro pulling. he explains how they did it. it's lifted but it might help goodluck. This is what they said they did.

We sell tickets and a random winner is drawn. They almost never have experience, so we just put it in 4x4, drive and put on the tow haul mode. We dont use low gear. This particular truck was a Lariat, so 3:55 gears with 35" tires makes it like a stock truck and 3:31's. No change was made to the sled, it just pulls like crazy. We prefer to use the FX4 and its 3:73 gears or an XLT with the Offroad Package. The taller gear evens out with the larger tires. Hope that answers the Q.

Oh ya? Put it in Drive and 4X4 high seems like a combination to make it bog down really quickly. I have never pulled before but what I have seen watching the pulls is as soon as a truck shift to the next gear it usually bogs down right away.

The announcer was saying that in the half ton class people usually use low range and hold one gear through the whole pull. One guy was coming down the track but you could tell the engine wasn't in the high rpm range because of the sound and then he said that truck is probably in high range and would of done better in low range.

When trying to get wheel speed do you floor it when taking off or that will make you spin and not get any speed?

As for the clevis height the people organizing the pull usually supply it unless you bring your own and the one they supply is not adjustable if I am not mistaking.

DO IT! 4x4 Low Range, put shifter into 2 to lock it into 2nd gear, build up a bit of boost (1500-1800 rpm with foot on break), take off and let it hook for the first 15ft or so then lay into it. Id drop your tire pressures to 25 rear and 20 front. Let the sled stop you before you let off the gas, if seen people let off as soon as the sled draws down but they couldve went for another 5-10ft. You will surprise people on how well it does stock. Last year i placed 5th 100% stock. My 3rd pull this year i was 3rd. A lot depends on the track. If its soft, you can hook and do well but if its real hard your just gonna spin.

ok I will give it a shot. I don't have an ecoboost engine so no need for boost but is it still a good idea to give it a little bit of throttle with the foot on the brake before taking off?

I have given up on fair pulls. Every time I went, it cost me $5k. Snapped the output shaft of NV241D transfer case, broke the U-joint off a Dana 70, broke a heim joint for a traction bar. I told my wife to never let me enter into another truck pull.

I wonder how the EB would do....

Well I pulled last night and everything went well except I should of use 1st gear because 2nd gear was too high I couldn't get any rpms it stayed around 3500-4000rpm and I only did 170 feet but I had fun. I will know better next time i'm out.

I was looking at getting one of those tow hooks that goes in the receiver hitch for the next time I pull but the ones at harbor freight says the pulling capacity is 7500lbs would that be enough or there is a good chance of it breaking off?
