I usually figure $1k drop every 10k mikes and round up. So at least $7k lower. That truck would sell in mid to upper 30s new. That deal is very fair. Highway miles are good miles.

the 5.0 has its own set of issues. that being said for a truck thats been run 64k miles if its not exhibiting any major issues right now its a fair assumption that its going to be ok. if something major were going to happen, it probably would have happened already.

Ziegler is a ford dealer that sells genuine ford ESP extended warranties online at a discount. There are others that do this also flood ford, Anderson Koch, Warrick and some I may be forgetting.

Anyway you can go online to their site right now and get a warranty price. Just worth doing to be sure the selling dealer isn't adding a premium on what they quote you.

I just pulled the window sticker online, turns out it is the 3.55 electronic locking rear axle. Carfax shows it was not a business vehicle and is a one owner truck. Private party kbb value is 28.5k. I will call a ford dealer Monday morning and see what they charge to check it out for me. If its only a hundred bucks, its money well spent. I doubt the dealer will throw in the warranty, and since the truck is over 60k miles, I can't buy the Ford ESP if my research is correct. If I buy the warranty it would only be to cover the transmission.

Now the flip side is the warranty is fully refundable (pro rated), so I could cancel it the next day and get a check for $1700 bucks to keep aside for repairs. I know, I'm still paying for it in the monthly payments but its an option I've seen people take. When you put it that way of 5k miles per month, that does seem like ALOT of miles. The town it was registered in (waaay out in the sticks) is 60 miles away from town so 120 miles per day 5 days a week for a year is 31k miles though, so there is still allot of extra miles to come from somewhere.

What would I look for to tell if its been used to tow extensively? The bed liner looks near new, as does the hitch. There is some yellow grease in the 4 pin trailer connector though, the big round one looks like its never been used.

If just the 4-pin was used then you know the truck only towed light trailers. The 7-pin is only used for heavy trailers with brakes

I looked online and evidently any ford vehicle with more than 36k miles on it is not eligible for a ford ESP. The site says to contact your local dealer to see what it is eligible for so I'm guessing that means 3rd party only with these miles.

That's just speculation, but I would have a very skilled mechanic go over this truck with a fine tooth comb.
^ I agree, that is a chit ton of miles in such a short time! That's 1200 miles a week! The price seems decent I suppose, the only thing I might be a little leary of would be oil changes. Because that would mean the previous owner had to change the oil every 8 weeks! And that would be on 10k miles intervals too! Are there any service records on the carfax report showing routine oil changes?

No service records on the auto check report. There is a penzoil filter on the truck and the oil has not yet been changed since being traded in. All the certified pre-owned trucks I have looked at had dealer oil changes listed on their car fax reports. Not sure if car fax shows those and auto check doesn't though.

Maybe you can get the dealer to give you the name of the first owner, and you can give them a call. I have done that before. Also, I would advise staying away from a third party warranty. If I were you I would put the 1700 bucks aside for a just in case, but you will probably be fine. Like someone said, if there were problems they will have been taken care of by now. Good luck, and do check it out good for your own piece of mind.

I own two 5.0L's, one with 13K (Wifey's car) and my F150 with 9K. Neither have had any problems so far.

If you love the truck buy it.....

Here is my opinion....you state that this will not be your DD and if it was me I would be looking at a new XLT or something....spending a little more money buys you warranty of 36,000 miles as well as buying 64,000 miles. I bet you could get a New Screw 4x4 XLT 5.0 for a very similar amount or close enough.

Resale value in a couple of years is going to stink as it has high mileage and currently its value is higher because of its age.

Look at an 08 now with say 75,000 miles on it and see what it is priced at and you will find that it drops a lot by age....and miles.

Good luck with your decision and lets us know what you decided.

Edit I just did a quick check an 08 Lariat with 75,000 miles or so is around $20,000 so the depreciation is good.
