The Ultimate MPG thread.
hi- am new to forum and have a 97 with 3rd door and 4.2V6. was wondering whether anyone out there has tried one of the many gas saver chips that are out there now-which ones and what MPG gains from them. I put a hydrogen generator on mine and it immediately smoothed out the idling and delivered smoother acceleration but the MPG is about the same so would like to try one of the chips-any experiences out there?....thanks...
I think I was told all FX4's have a 3.73 rear gear so I'll have to toy around and see what works best and the costs associated.
My mileage has been going down since new. Only 3500 on the meter, lifetime average 13.6, current tank 12.4 and I have been purposely been driving for economy this tank. Any idea? I do not expect it to drive like a prius but did expect a little better...

1- What is your driving style like? More specifically, are you heavy on the pedal, use CC whenever possible, plan ahead for stops, etc.? All of these make a difference in mileage.
2- What is your driving area like? Pretty level, rolling hills, significant steep terrain?
3- It's early, I know, but what tires are you using? I have the Pirellis, but will be switching to Michelin LTXs as soon as these wear out. I get better mileage and performance with them (based on other vehicles I've had). The Scorpions look good, but don't wear as well.
4- What have you done with/to your truck? Your truck should definitely be doing better on mileage. I have an 11 SCREW FX4 with the 5.0 and 3.73 rear. I run pure synthetic oils, with Royal Purple in the tranny and diffs. I run my tires at 5psi over the max on the door label (but it is less than the max specified on the tires themselves). I also have a cab-high canopy, which makes a difference in airflow over the truck (not a hightop cap or deck lid). I keep it waxed at least once a quarter and wash it bi-weekly. My highway average (light on the pedal) is right at 19.6mpg, running at 65. If I drop to 55 (right at 1500RPM), my mileage is just about 21mpg. I do use some hypermiling techniques, but don't get radical about it. This is better than some guys I know running the EB with a 3.31 rear. And I don't have the CAC/performance issues!

5- Lastly, how much crap do you have in the bed, long term? The heavier your load, as you're probably aware, the lower you mileage will be.
Oh, for what it's worth, the mileage figures for the EB did drop from 2011 when it first came out, to the current model. If you talk to an honest salesman, he'll tell you that the 11 EB was rated (in 2WD) at 23 HWY. The 13 is rated at 21-22, with the same vehicle configuration. Still haven't gotten a straight answer on why the numbers would have gone done.
What should be interesting to see is what happens when the new style comes out with the aluminum body panels and the so-called "new" EB engine.
Hope this helps.

Can I ask a couple of questions about synthetic fluids in the transmission and differential?
-When are you supposed to change these? If I switch mine out am I throwing money away or is it good to change these fluids once in awhile?
-Where do you have it done? This won't be a DIY job for me (obviously LOL) but can Grease Monkey bang this out for me?
FWIW, I thought my cab height topper dropped my mileage a bit (maybe 1mpg?)
Thanks guys

The best bang for the buck. For those of us that do not have the instant mpg display on our dash is one of these or similar.

Just by adjusting my driving style i have increased my econ by 2.1/2 KPL and its still getting better. This will have paid for itself after a few tanks of fuel easily. Also switching to synthetic oils help. I learned that one in my diesel. One oil change back to old dino oil and i lost KM, harder starts, and had to plug it in for the first time in the winter since switching it to synth

Hey - thanks very much for the reply. I will put my answers after each question in CAPS.
OK, a few questions for you:
1- What is your driving style like? More specifically, are you heavy on the pedal, use CC whenever possible, plan ahead for stops, etc.? All of these make a difference in mileage.
FOR THE LAST FOUR TANKS OF GAS I HAVE BEEN VERY EASY ON THE PEDAL. I USE CC, I COAST TO STOP, ETC... I HAVE BEEN DRIVING TO TRY TO IMPROVE MPG...
2- What is your driving area like? Pretty level, rolling hills, significant steep terrain?
LEVEL WITH SOME SLIGHT ROLLING HILLS.
3- It's early, I know, but what tires are you using? I have the Pirellis, but will be switching to Michelin LTXs as soon as these wear out. I get better mileage and performance with them (based on other vehicles I've had). The Scorpions look good, but don't wear as well.
I HAVE DUNLAPS I BELIEVE - IT IS WHATEVER CAME ON THE PLATINUM 2013.

MY TRUCK IS STOCK EXCEPT FOR THE HARD FOLDING BED COVER BUT IF ANYTHING THIS SHOULD HELP NOT HURT. TIRES ARE ALL INFLATED TO THE NUMBER ON THE DOOR BUT I GUESS I COULD RAISE IT A BIT.
5- Lastly, how much crap do you have in the bed, long term? The heavier your load, as you're probably aware, the lower you mileage will be.
THAT IS WHY I AM PISSED. MY TRUCK BED IS EMPTY. I AM USUALLY IN THE TRUCK BY MYSELF. I HAVE NOT HAULED ANYTHING WITH IT YET AND THE MPG IS HORRIBLE.
RIGHT NOW I AM DOING MOSTLY COUNTRY ROAD DRIVING AND NOT FOR LONG DISTANCES SO I UNDERSTAND ALL ABOUT THE TRUCK NOT GETTING WARM, WINTER FUEL, ETC... BUT I AM WELL BELOW THE CITY MPG. BEST I DO ON THE HIGHWAY AT 65 IS 15 - 15 MPG...
