I've got a 21 5.0, and for the most part its just me in it. Within three weeks of buying it, I was heading south from Boston to Greenville SC, the first of five trips down there to clear out the in laws home. Thank god that place is sold. The heaviest job I give my truck is towing my off road Land Rover on a Uhaul auto transport. I track every mile using the Fuelly app.
Best MPG every was last July. First tank covering 456 miles I got 24.0mpg leaving Greenville at 4am, traveling up 85 to Charlotte then on 77 to 81 North to Winchester VA. Second tank 496 miles 25.8mpg. Truck was full of household stuff and me. Nothing like summer gas, minimal traffic, mild temperatures and constant speed barely exceeding the speed limit.
Worst goes to a towing weekend 11.9mpg. That's the one time I made use of the 70mph speed limit in Maine. The wheeling truck sticks out high above my F150. Best mpg towing was with a pop up camper behind me. That barely reduced my interstate mpg by 2mpg. Lifetime, currently is 20.0, and is expected to drop as I will be doing more towing shortly...... I'm already planning for it as my last fill up was with Premium. Takes a while to empty out a 36 gallon tank.....
I have a 2021 3.5 Ecoboost with a lifetime 19.2 avg mpg over 25000 miles, mostly city driving with a handful of road trips thrown in there. No towing.
The best I've seen on a long trip was 22.8 mpg from Colorado Springs to Dallas at (or a little over) 80 mph.
I've seen endless complaints about MPG on the new Powerboost 4x4 and it getting nothing close to the mpg on the sticker. Truth is, I can see why someone would get horrible mpg. These thing's have hot rod performance and it's tough pretending it's a prius, but if you don't drive like a lunatic, it is possible to get amazing MPG..
so what's amazing mpg?
well.. my 2017 5.0 was getting 19mpg all around, about 22mpg highway and 17 mpg city.. My 2019 5.0 platinum was getting 16mpg city and 18mpg highway, i blame it on the added weight of the platinum.. my new 23 powerboost, i get 33mpg city and 25mpg highway. I average around 27mpg all around. With the max tow package, i can get just shy of 1000miles a tank. It's honestly incredible.. I suspect I'll lose mpg in the winter, but it's been amazing so far..
This thread is 142 pages long, so I KNOW I have posted here before, just not too sure how long ago. Anyhoooo, we were on a trip across the state last week, traveling on a stretch of I-16 and I was using the cruise control (which I use A LOT of the time I drive). Came upon about a 5 mile stretch, pretty much dead-flat and the cruise was set at about 66mph. My a/c is non-working so the windows were down, and the temp outside is 83*. I pretty much check my MPG every time we take this road and always use the phone's GPS to check against. You can see the speedo is at 66mph ,and the MPG is about as hi as I've ever seen at this speed.
Did a little test last weekend. Towed my truck on the trailer I bought for it a total of just under 425 miles.
On the way north got 11.20 including towing at Maine's 70mph limit for 130 miles. Had about 200lbs more in the bed on the way North than on return journey.
On the way south, towing at 65, 13.17 total. Better transmission and engine temps to.
Last trip up north it was heavy fog both ways, kept speeds down to 65-70. Total trip on my 2016 2.7 eco boost super crew short box was 570 miles 19-20 mpg. The truck currently has 120k on it.
Right now I'm averaging 20.2mpg on my 2.7L. In the summer when the weather is warner I'll get around 22.5 avg. I drive on cruise alot and I live in a flat area with alot of straight roads.
Just made a road trip, 600 miles each way
22.5 mpg running 80mph in very heavy traffic.
19.3 mpg running 80 mph with zero traffic. Basically, alone on the highway.
So when NASCAR talks about drafting, its very real.
