Default Which Engine?

My salesman buddy is trying to talk me into a 2021. The used manager is offering me 4k more than paid for my truck sight unseen.

That said I am debating between the 3.0 Powerstroke and the Powerboost. My daily commute is about 80miles round trip almost all highway (I hit 3 redlights in 80miles.). I will use it for general truck things and occasional towing of upto 8k. Which would you go with?

Why would you consider the diesel?

25+mpg? Where I live diesel is $0.04 more than gas. My 2.7 is getting 18-19mpg

With the diesel you get a 100k mile warranty. Out of those I would pick the diesel. I prefer the regular 3.5 ecoboost out of all the engine options. I drove the 2.7 and I didn’t care much for it. If warranty and peace of mind is a value to you, go diesel.

With no more information it is really hard to say one way or the other. Powerstroke and Powerboost are expensive options that may be difficult to recoup in operating expenses.

Diesels generally require expensive fuel filters be replaced every 20,000 miles.

Cost of diesel fuel is much greater than unleaded gasoline in most regions. Here it is only $0.34 higher, which is historically unusually close to gasoline.

My 2.7EB 4x4 gets an honest 22 MPG at 70 MPH on 87 octane. Locally 87 is $2.599 and ULSD is $2.939. A diesel must get 25 MPG to break even with simple economics. But how do you figure the extra purchase price up front? Must do better than 25 MPG to start recovering the added cost. Most likely the Powerstroke or Powerboost will have higher resale value.

If my 2.7 got 22 I would probably keep it but the 18-19 is killing me.

80 miles at 18 MPG vs 22 MPG at $2.599/gallon is $2.10/day. How much will you spend on a new truck to save $2.10/day? Or even $3?

My Subaru Outback gets 30 MPG at 70 MPH. Perhaps you need a Subaru? Drove a Prius for 7 year average of better than 50 MPG.

80 miles/day, 200 days/year is 16,000 miles.

16,000 miles at 50 MPG is 320 gallons. At 18 MPG is 889 gallons. At 2.599/gallon the 50 MPG saves $1478/year. 18 vs 22 MPG is $420/year.

18 MPG? Lift kit? Tires? Other mods?

Stock in that regard. No lift no bigger tires all mods are cosmetic.

It's a 16 with 75k miles thinking I'm a victim of valve cokeing. Poor gas mileage rough idle even when warm. It improves for about a week after a induction service. Dealer quoted $3200 to manually clean the valves.

Definitely go with the diesel if those are the choices. While both are 'new technology' for Ford, the Powerboost is just too unproven.
