Well it’s done. The flares are fine. Wish they had adhesive and stick tight, and I wish there were splash guards for more protection but this will help for now. Thankfully I believe that with the black accessories and the dark color paint these look fine if I leave them black.
Since you painted the rear axle housing, maybe mask off the fender and use some spray undercoating on that fender edge you are concerned about. Then when someone offers some nice low profile flares that work with mud flaps, you can add them.
This seems like a pretty sensible solution. OP could do it with plastidip or another type of rubberized spray that wouldnt require sanding the paint for adhesion and would offer more protection for rocks. Sounds like he should also look in to Forscan for his chime woes.
When you came here saying how disspointed you are in Ford for not providing flares I assume you meant like what you'd order from Bushwacker.
My 2016 Lariat had that nice trim effect to the fenders (I didn't tell anybody I had a flare though).
I don't know what model they came standard on but I believe like an XLT didn't get the treatment.
I still can't get onboard with the strength of opinion but at least I better understand what you were asking for.

Yeah the IIRC the lariat or higher models had them, or they were at least an option. The frustration for me is really that Ford doesn’t make a product to protect the paint in the wheel wells as even an option on any trim level for the f150. As I mentioned above my 22 F250 king ranch came with them. I really don’t like spending as much as I do on trucks but they are necessity. Even though my F150 is only an XLT I’d still like to keep it looking nice and I’m very fussy about fit and finish. The quality of the aftermarket flares, in my opinion it’s just sad compared to what my KR came with from ford. As mentioned by someone else above- maybe other manufacturers are no better. Guess I haven’t paid enough attention.
You hang a plastic flare on the truck, then when it inevitably shifts/vibrates which then results in chipped and rubbed off paint on the quarters and fenders.

This is the reason I wish my '17 didnt have the tiny factory flares. All around the edges of them now you can see scuffing in the paint.

XLT with Sport Appearance had the wheel moldings, XLT with chrome did not.
Have to say I liked the wheel well trim from the factory on my 2016 Lariat, gives it a more finished look and offers more protection. On my 21 Tremor the front tires do stick out a bit, I have the stock tires and wheels. I will say I was surprised when I learned there were no factory wheel well moldings available. Chimes don't bother me, the double honk certainly does, just don't want to play around with Forscan, have an extended warranty don't want to give Ford an excuse not to cover any problems. So I live with it.
