Default Tailgate opened while driving

I was driving for about 45 minutes from one freeway to another at about 80 miles an hour and all the sudden my tailgate opened up! I had no warning aside from a kind motorist to came up next to me and told me that it was open, I have a gatortrax cover so I am not able to see if tale gate is open while driving. I am not 100% sure if I fully latched it before I left but there should be some kind of warning indicator if it does open up when you are driving. Anybody have something like this happen to them?

You don't have the tailgate open light? I thought the 2016 came with one. There is a TSB on how to fix it if it's on all the time..

Guess no reason to trade in my 2015 on a new truck..

I have a 2015 Lariat and have never seen a tailgate open light. I did have mine come open once while carrying groceries in the back using a bed divider. Luckily a fellow driver alerted me so I didn't "lose my lunch". I've gotta go look for that light. Don't think I have one tho cause other bugaboos have resulted in the dashboard going off like a pinball machine. I'd think I'd have noticed.

That's not fair Bob. Just because you Forscand a forever running cooler and a tailgate light doesn't mean the rest of us have the same.

No my 2015 doesn't have one yet... But I have read on here about Fords fix for the 2016 that have one... If built before they stopped installing them on 10/28/15 ..
And if it's on all the time because the switch doesn't work..... The official Ford fix is to jumper the wires in the tailgate is open wiring so the switch is bypassed and doesn't do anything anymore. So the warning light stays off.. The part needed is called a delete cap!

Seems if build after that date they don't have the warning light..

I have a cap on my truck so I can just see the top of the tailgate in the mirror. And if the tailgate was closed and than the cap closed the tailgate can't open..

After playing with talegate it is impossible to keep up without it latching on at least one side, I can latch one side by slowly pushing closed and adding force to one side corner or the other but then it locks there is no middle ground, with one side lached I locked truck and pulled and pushed to see if I cloud unlatch it and was not able to. Only thing that happened was latching other side and only way to drop tailgate after that was with remote. so some how it must have unlocked while driving.

I was not able to get any warning light that tail gate was open. Calling dealer tomorrow and hope they have a fix.

I wonder if we can add the switch back in and reactivate it with Forscan?
