Acool, I sincerely thank you for the assistance. It is done. After editing the autoinstall file with your recommendations it completed in 15 minutes. Ironically, GN is back and, I think, the correct version. Can someone confirm?
Thanks again. I hope this helps others who were as frustrated as I was.
I was helping my neighbor with his MY16 NA w/NAV (Built 10/2015) and we kept getting the MEM_03 error shortly after plugging USB into the port. Triple checked files, did it again, unsuccessful. JL1T-14G381-AJ.zip was my build file (2.33 GB), downloaded from Ford owners website.
After numerous times following Ford's instructions, came upon the suggestion in Dakota62 earlier post about breaking the autoinstall.lst into halves and removing the Item 4 lines. Hey, I'm desperate.
Plugged her in a saw that the red light on the USB was blinking off and on quickly, hey it was doing something! No error messages, in fact no message at all. The screen never tells you it is doing a damn thing until the install is complete. It took 10-15 minutes, then it pops up message and says update completed, remove USB and updates will take effect on next key start. Upon restart, v2.3_17019 is installed. I'll be damned!
I spent 3-4 hours total on my neighbor's truck. What a nerd! Below is the successful autoinstall.lst file. Hope that 14G381-AJ.tar.gz file is not important. If something doesn't work, at least I can take what was successful and add to it.

Happy to help. Yes yours looks just like mine did after a proper upgrade from 1.0 to 2.3:

Oh you know, 14G381 is just the main part of the Sync operating system
The good news is that you must have installed it despite thinking you took it out, otherwise you wouldn't be on 2.3. What happens unbeknownst to many is that the packages are copied and remain copied on your APIM typically until an install routine is completed. The MEM error is due to improper housekeeping, as the system has to schedule when to copy, extract, and install items. If the timing gets off, you run out of space and then have to get creative.
I went from v2.2 to v2.3 (following the instructions about deleting the two lines so as to avoid the memory error) and it updated fine. Unfortunately my LG V10 no longer connects via Android Auto. Anyone experienced this? Is rolling back to v2.2 my best option?
I don't have experience with that but the two lines deleted are voice and gn. I would think they have nothing to do with AA.
I would first try a master reset. If that doesn't work, turn off bluetooth on your phone and connect again. If that doesn't work, try a different android phone to rule out 2.3 bug. If that doesn't work, I would try to install the full untouched 2.3 over your 2.3, and see if it lets you. If none of those work .... I'll have to get back to you
I will apologize in advance because somebody is going to tell me I should have looked elsewhere.
New 2017 with synch 3 but not with navigation. If you connect to your home wi-fi and tell the truck to update automatically, does that work?
It works for many people but not for everyone. Ford rolls out updates via website/usb, wifi, or forced visit to the dealer. It can be different for whatever reason. Go to settings > general > about sync and see what version you are on.

We tried this and while we made a connection, 2 GB of files over the air can take a loooonnngg time to download. His internet download was only 20 Mbps and the connection was marginal even out in the driveway. Same issues over 4G. Ours always seemed to stop halfway and that was after 2 hours of truck running. Perhaps it just picks up where it left off the next time you start the truck.

I noticed that there were some temp/ghost files on the USB drive that were related to a previous install attempt. I suspect I got lucky then, and that file was already in the APIM. Good luck everyone.
I have a 2016 XLT that had ver 1.0 of Sync 3 and after being unsuccessful on my first install attempt of Sync 3 Ver 2.3, which I think was my fault for several reasons, I was successful the second time using just the instructions on the ford owners website. What I may have done wrong the first time was I didn't use a 32GB usb flash drive that was formatted with an exFAT file system and I stopped the install after it said it was complete, but according to the ford website I should have let it continue to run. On my second attempt, I bought a 32 GB flash drive and formatted it using Windows to a exFAT system. Then I unzipped the JL1T-14G381-AJ.zip file and copied the files onto the flash drive. I then safely removed the usb from the computer, started my truck and plugged the flash drive in my truck's usb port. The install started automatically and seemed to pick up from where I had previously unplugged it. Once the install was complete and after turning off my truck, exiting, and re-entering it and starting it up, the version listed was 2.3. I connected my phone to the truck with a usb cable and the android auto app worked. I'm finally able to use google maps and have it displayed on my truck's screen. Anyway, the update did work as described on the Ford Owner's website for my truck.
