I've read different threads and I can't seem to get an answer, will the sync 3 work on our 2015 F150s? Some say it's hardware and software and some say it's just software. Does anyone know for sure?

If it is just software then there will be no point to upgrade to sync 3.

The main problem with the current sync is the hardware. It runs a 600mhz processor (which was popular back in 2001) and I believe I read somewhere that all of the hardware together was about $100 worth of computer parts.

Basically-be glad it's more than just software...

Until it is released I don't know why people are saying "no, it will not work" without a wiring diagram to prove it.

Unless Ford completely changes the wiring harnesses on the 2016 I would expect the SYNC head unit to connect with no issues.

Even if it plugs in that doesn't mean it will work. Your truck is a computer network.

Think of it this way. You can't just take a computer from one business network and stick it in a different network without changing settings, etc.

When I bought the truck a month ago the salesman told me that the sync 3 would be coming out and it would have a bunch of new features like apple car play and told me to be on the look out for the software update, so now I'm wondering if he actually knows what he's talking about

Why should ford have to upgrade you? No one made you buy a 15. Every model year brings new upgrades!! It happens every single year so stop whining go buy a 16 then, and when the 17 comes with a different trans and power upgrades ford should reimburse you right? Maybe when the 18 comes with an upgraded time of paint we should all get a free paint job?

Not necessarily correct, after all you can get an aftermarket head unit to replace the MyTouch on previous models. Sure, not much selection right now for the 2015 but that will change. However I still stand by my point that unless the 2016 is a complete redesign in wiring I see no reason the Sync 3 will not work in a 2015, and since you used "computers" as a reference I am an IT Specialist with over 25 years experience So your comparison would be like trying to take a head unit out of a Ford and sticking it into a Ram. 2 different companies and 2 different settings
