It does need the update. I don't remember what version it is off the top of my head, but I know it's not version 3.0. The WiFi scans shows there is an update available, but about 5 seconds into the download it fails.

For some reason, I can't get on the Ford owner site using Chrome any longer. It used to work. Now it just goes into an endless loop of trying to log in. I have to use IE to get on. Anyone else have this problem?

Also, I updated to 3.0 the day I bought home the truck. The site keeps telling me that the 3.0 update is available and only shows the update on the day it was built. I've tried do the wifi update to see if it will sync (no pun intended). Is there any way to tell the site that I have 3.0 so I can actually be notified when there is an update needed?

I've had to manually install each update since 1.0. My truck was built in December of 2015, so I have one of the first with sync 3. The wi fi update does not work for me and several other folks on this site and others.

Version 3.0 was the only update that actually showed the update on the owners site. But it always showed the current available update.

My 2018 tried to download an update via wifi and I had no luck. I went to the owner.ford.com website and it claimed I needed to install an update of Sync 3 even though my truck said I had Sync 3. Nevertheless, I downloaded the update to a flash drive and installed during a long drive. The install process was very easy and it automatically recognized the update when I inserted my flash drive into the trucks USB. The install took 15-20 minutes. The only thing it did was update the Ford owner website so it knows which version of Sync I have now.

There you go. Most times the updates work fine. But for some you may have to try a different browser, and try different flash drives.

Does everything still function while doing the update?

No, meaning a usb thumb drive that I downloaded the update to from Ford's site using my PC. The Wifi connects to my home network fine, says it's downloading, but never goes anywhere from there.. I literally sat, idleing, for 30 minutes and it didn't change

Yes. Unlike my 2012 where the system was dedicated to the update, everything functions as normal during the update. However, changes won't apply until the next time you start your truck. I was pleasantly surprised by this!
