single "clunk" when starting the engine

Nceric1989, the customer care people were the ones that lined up the FSE to come out. I dealt with a lady at Ford named Lynn Arledge. She really wasnt interested in getting the issue fixed. She would just say whatever the techs/dealership/FSE said. If you google "Ford says its normal" you can find various instances of where Ford would say this, but would eventually issue a recall or tsb or get sued in court to fix the issue. Im pretty sure this is going to be one of those. Im curious why none of the car/truck magazines havnt seen this. I bet Ford wont tell them its normal!

Does it ever do that if it is cold? Mine does in any state, cold or warm.
I like the idea of being organized about this issue and, probably, here is how we should do it:
- define a sequence of steps that make it 100% reproducible. I believe we have one already?
- start something like online petition and advertise it on this forum. Simply ask as many 2017/2018 owners to try to make the test described (say, 3 times) and if the results are consistent - put the name, some contact info etc.
- eventually pass this information to Ford and the related agencies, like NHTSA, TransportCanada etc. Make sure Ford understands the scale and the fact that the owners are organizing.
- ask everyone who had this problem to drop a message on the appropriate review boards (carcomplaints.com etc). This will increase the number of complains for a particular vehicle. This may be painful for Ford either way: if the issue continues with the current model year, this will lower its reputation. If the issue disappears with the new model, it means Ford has quietly fixed the problem or redesigned some related parts.
- ask everyone to make sure their report is noted by the dealer and on every visit.
- the data from this online "petition" may be a good start for an eventual class action because they would quickly show the minimal number of people involved (proportional to the number of forum members having trucks from the year(s) affected)
I do not enjoy the idea of putting pressure on Ford but, as both 2017 F-150 owner and Ford shareholder I am concerned about the quality of their product and its potential future reliability.

Add me to the list...
Loud bang from undercarriage... only noticed it on warm restart, after driving and truck is warmed and then sits for a short while......
Truck now has 6000 miles..2017, 3.5L, 10 speed 4x4..
Have not caught it yet on a cold start..
For sure is not a normal characteristic!!!!!
Never had any of my past (4) F150s do this!!

Each of you really needs to open a case with Ford customer care, then post the case number here. I'll post mine tomorrow when i get to work. If Ford only sees one open case, they aren't going to do anything.

So I have the same clunk at warm startup, and on occasion its on cold startups.
I have taken it to the shop 2 times in the past and it is currently in the shop now for the sound.
Its a 2018 5.0 with 10 speed
Issue started about 4k miles
has 7k miles on it now
It made the noise regardless of the parking brake was engaged or not.
During the troubleshooting of the truck, starting it and shutting it down repeatedly it started lunging forward which was odd. The wheels did not move more than a few inches, but they thought that was extremely odd and possibly unsafe.
Right now I am dealing with the service manage and shop foreman for the issue. The service manager heard the noise for the first time and was in awe. At first they thought it might be a vacuum issue and then said after further investigation its coming from the transmission. The service manager reached out to ford engineering regarding the issue and is working with them on a solution. The transmission is currently out of the truck and as soon as I hear what their path is going to be to correct it I will post here as well.

reybeast,
Have you experimented with permanently disabling Auto Start/Stop to see if that makes a difference? Scanned the thread; didn't see it mentioned or missed it.
Curious if for some reason they're letting the auxiliary transmission pump run during start up from a truck off state, or if they're not letting pressure bleed down all the way after a hard shutdown. My understanding is that the aux pump keeps clutches 'lightly' engaged during an auto-start/stop event. Perhaps disabling the transmission aux pump as an experiment might narrow some things down. You would think putting it in Park would also bleed pressures off the clutch packs. But I ain't no mechanic.
For what it's worth, mine's done it too; random. Rolled off the line in October 2017, Dearborn. I've not bother to mess around with it yet; too busy.

Yep, tried disabling auto/start/stop temporarily using forscan tool, didn't change it at all. I've always thought it was odd that it has never clunked when auto stop/starts at a light or intersection. It only happens in park, not in neutral and not in drive.

Well I just got my 2018 Crew Cab XLT Special Edition 5.0L 4x4 and it does it as well. I just lifted it with bilstein 6112s, and 295/70/18 too tires, I figured if it was clunking due to this driveshaft movement that the bigger tires would dampen the movement. It unfortunately did not. I will just drive it until something breaks and make them fix it under warranty. If there isn't a FORD TSB or recall, they won't do **** about. Been through this issue on every american car I've owed. Why do I have to love Ford trucks so much as I have to put up with their ****ty service departments.
