Short Rant...

Leaving the hitch in has protected my '02 in a love tap from behind at a stop light and twice now in the parking lot because people with lower cars and mini-vans do not know how to park and run into my bumper. I consider it cheap insurance for this situations.
Additionally, because of my occupation I tow multiple trailers often so I have a need for the trailer hitch and multiple ***** for differing couplers depending on the trailer.
Because of these reasons mine will stay in. People should pay attention to where they are working and like has already been stated, should not be walking that close to my vehicle.

I'll continue to leave mine in whenever I like, which is most of the time:
1) It perfectly protected my 15-day old Lariat when I got rear-ended--HARD--by an illegal immigrant in a POS.
2) It's much safer to leave the 20lb hitch secured in the receiver than it is to leave it unsecured in the bed of the truck or inside.
3) I use it as a step to get into the bed without dropping the tailgate.
I can't stand when people presume to tell me how I should be using the pickup I paid for with my own resources.

My drawbar protrudes 7" from the bumper. If you get that close, you are too close anyway. Also, it's painted bright yellow so it's easy to see.

Kinda like dodge owners driving around with their tow mirrors flipped out without a trailer.
I recently learned in my province that if you have someone rear ended you with your hitch on you are half responsible, doesn't make sense to me.
I am guilty though of keeping my hitch on, keeps people from driving close to my truck.

OK, this is a truck forum where people tow things so this has to be the right place to post this...
For the love of GOD please people, remove your Receiver Hitch Ball Mounts when you are NOT TOWING something!!!
Why oh why do people drive around town with them installed, but they aren't towing anything? This is a major pet peeve of mine. When parking in a parkng lot, it makes navigating tight rows very difficult and have you ever hit one with your shin? It's super painful.
I liken driving around town with one installed to wearing a condom around town all of the time. Your ready for something that you aren't going to do. It just doesn't make any since.
End rant...

I leave mine in and don't give a rats *** if it bothers you or anyone else. I use it as a step, bumper protection, and don't want to F with it to hook up my trailer or boat when I need to. Can't even believe this is an area of concern to anyone. And I have not used a condom in 20 years

My brother got hit from behind when his '15 F-350 platinum was but a few days old, trailer ball kept him from having to have his bumper replaced and maybe the tailgate too. Seems to me that most hitches I've seen only protrude about 4-6", like many have said already, if you hit that then you are too close. I use a B&W tow & stow that I keep flipped under the truck, the flat plate sticks out maybe an inch and a half behind the bumper, great reference point for backing into spaces and protects me from the parking lot love tap.

Why not leave it in, I keep my 3 ball hitch in specifically so that if someone pulls too close to me in the parking lot or hits me at an intersection it will leave a nice big hole in their bumper/radiator/hood, and won't mess up my bumper, also makes a good step, and you should never get close enough to my truck in the parking lot to hit your shin anyway.
