Default Returning to Ford

Hello everyone, I am thinking of returning to a Ford F-150 after 5 1/2 years of owning a Toyota Tundra.

After visiting the Auto Show in Minneapolis, I wanted to look at getting a new Tundra, specifically their TRD Pro edition (Toyota Tundra's off road package designed to compete against a Raptor)......however, I find out that particular trim package is extremely hard to get, which left me annoyed to say the least.

After a less than warm response from the Toyota people in my area, I started looking around and I came across a gray (they call it Magnetic) 2016 F150 XLT Supercrew with the sport truck appearance (with 18" 6 spoke pocket wheels). I liked it because because it doesn't have chrome on the vehicle,

The truck has a 2.7 V6 Ecoboost which I understand has auto stop/auto start technology.....not really sure I like that. Does anyone know if this engine has any known mechanical issues? Is it under-powered? Should I look at the V8 that is offered??

From amenities standpoint it has the any new Tundra beat. Rear view camera, tow package, black side steps, heated front seats & powered adjustable seats, power rear slider window, LED's in the bed, box link thing....not really sure what it does, remote start, and SYNC 3 - again not sure what that all entails.

The tundra is not a competitve product right now in my opinion. It was great....10 years ago when it originally came out. All 3 of the detroit offrings are significantly better right now-including the F150

I say go for it if you like it. I have a 2015 magnetic XLT supercrew with the 2.7 ecoboost. The engine is not underpowered at all and will definately beat out the tundra's 5.7 off the line.

In my experience, the main difference between the two, is that ford is more capable, where as toyota will be more reliable. Ford is a better towing and hauling platform, yet toyota will be the get in it and drive gentleman's truck.

You see toyotas in places like LA, and you see fords in places like the oil fields in the dakotas or at prudhoe bay.

I work in the technology field and for several dealerships. One of my best customers is a Toyota/Lexus dealership. The GM (Owner) told me the other day when Toyota invited dealers to the Southeast sales summit which was summer 2015 (not sure the exact name) they had the Tundra, Chevy, and RAM products there to show the competetive advantages between Toyota and the others. There was no Ford there, and they told him because Ford's new platform with Aluminum, Technology and trim was on another level. He told me "Ford builds one heck of a truck".

I actually like the Nissan Titan from what I have seen, although market share sucks so would resale. The NV platform they built this truck on is solid, our company has NV 2500/3500 vans.

The 2.7 is a very capable engine. The only concern I would have is that without the payload package, the GVWR is lower than it would be if the truck had the 5.0 or 3.5 EB.

Now, that may not be a problem if you don't need the payload but if you tow, you might need that payload (and that is not saying that the 2.7 doesn't tow well, from what I've read, it tows great).

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the Ford power plants. I have the same truck you list in 4x4 with the 5.0. I absolutely love the truck. My reasoning for the 5.0 was pretty simple. I have trouble changing with the times and really didn't even consider any of the other options. That said, pretty much all my neighbors with a F150 have the Ecoboost. You just have to take it for a ride (city and highway) and see what you think. As far as platform, Ford is an easy choice. And that truck in Magnetic with the Sport package was my #1 choice.

Ok everyone don't flame me but do you really want a Toyota guy screaming im going back to Toyota 10 mins after he buys his truck??? Let's just say you've been told. I'm still buying because it's what I want. You decided to post instead of doing any searching. So I'm helping. If you still decide it's what you want... Then welcome to the family.

List of Issues

Visual Inspection

· Visible paint problems, (door jambs) cracks, malformed body panels
· Check the space between the cab/ bed, make sure the gap is the same both sides.
· Cab/bed alignment
· Check if door gap is even, door alignments
· Climb into the bed and look down into the rooffor paint or malformation
· Hood/cowl /fender alignment / interference
· Tailgate alignment
· Sheet Metal smoothness ( especially @ doorhandles )
· Cracked window moldings
· Cowl joint weatherstrip
· Check keypad orientation
· Tailgate remote opening - sticking
· Tailgate damper - missing
· Roof gutter seam
· Frowning bumper :-(
· Check intake tube clamps for tightness
· Open/close doors, hood, tailgate

Under side

· Oil leaks, stains under the truck
· Differential leaks/seeping
· Rust on frame, drive line, etc
· F/R Differential rust
· Check door sticker for ORDERED axle code L9 (3.55 ELD )
· check the heat shield material glued to bottomof the truck bed.

Interior

· leaks on the carpet, stains
· Sunroof leakage (do the carwash)
· discoloration of glove box
· Rear seat center armrest fits flush
· Try All Seatbelts - extension problems
· Check the dashboard for any warps above the instrument cluster by the VIN plate and around the area of the passenger side airbag

Operation/drive tests

· Check NAV map version - should be latest (A6?)
· Check presence/ absence of heat/cooled seat controls on Climate Control screen.
· Console Rattle
· rattle noise at startup
· rattles in the dash
· rattles in the back seats, moonroof, front, rear doors
· wind noise, door, cabin
· Wind noise from top passenger side of windshieldor front door seals
· Shaking mirrors
· cooled (heated) seats that don't work
· Torque convertor whine noise
· Drifting to the right (or left) on flat level roads(check tire pressure first)
· 4x4 operation grinding clunking

Long term issues

· leather seat stretch(may take time)
· Be aware of possible adaptive cruise control issues
· Check for the rear end bumping to the side whengoing over bumps
· harsh downshift going from 5th - 4th (tsb may fix)
· Door/locks that freeze in cold weather after moisture is introduced
· Tailgate step pops up by itself (by half of aninch) over bumps

Drive it on a smooth road to listen for air leaks and test tracking, drive it on a bumpy road to listen for rattles and hums, take it thru a car wash to check for leaks(sunroof).

Climb on it, under it, and go all around it. TAKE YOUR TIME!

Anything you can find before you "pay the loot" will be easier to correct than later (if ever in some cases)

i was also looking into the trd pro. i wouldn't call it true raptor competition. but it def is a nice truck.

i cannot get over toyotas ****ty interiors. the interior in my 95 supra looks better - lol

as others have stated you can't go wrong with any of fords engines. i will say however. get 3.73 gears if you go 5.0

If everyone took every negative from every truck made (all manufacturers) they'd never buy a truck or any other vehicle.

People come here to complain the sky isn't the right color blue...

Enjoy your new truck whomever you decide to buy from.

Remember warranty's are offered so that if there is a problem it can be addressed and remedied.

you and I know that. But we still have a Toyota troll on here sooooo happy he dumped his ford for his Toyota. And honestly maybe if he knows ahead of time it's not going to be perfect like his Toyota he will make an informed decision. Trying to keep the trolls to a minimum. Especially the ones that can't put 2.7 in the search bar. I'm not complaining. Just want to inform him before I and we have to listen to him starting a mpg thread, oil leaking thread, leaking sunroof noisy sunroof thread........... It's an awesome truck!! Even spaced aged!! And I will tell you I am more than willing to deal with plenty of bs to have an

F150 that is compared to my 2003
A rocket ship!!! 1/4 mile wise
Sooooooo limo quiet
Can tow double my trucks tow limit
Almost double my mpgs
Options that others will not or can not supply
Nice ride for a tough truck.

And in every way a beautiful truck that can do the roll it was created for.
