Default Replacement Key, OUCH!

quick summary - Someone stole my jacket from Church last spring with one of my keys in the pocket. Never looked into replacing the key.

I asked the parts guy this week while I was getting oil changed. Holy sticker shock batman!!!

Key + programming to the truck == $250

I think I will just diligently keep track of my one remaining key

Yes. You didn't read that on the forum in 12+ years? When you had two keys, you could have bought a new one on the internet inexpensively, and programmed it yourself.

Problem is you can't program a new key without two master keys, or the software. A competent locksmith with software can do it and will usually charge less then a dealer. Good idea to have a third key made and leave the two masters at home.

$250 is cheap for a dealer, my local wanted $300+, locksmith across the street from dealer key + cutting was about $120. I programmed it.

good luck...if you lose that key you are really up a creek...then you are looking at a tow bill on top of that + the cost of 2 keys

Yeah, I remember the thread a while back where the owner was upset to have to spend $500+ at the dealership because he misplaced his keys and/or the ex had one of them.

Time to change churches. Sorry about your key, though. I'd fork over the cash and get it done. Good luck.

This thread has me thinking I should buy a key and program it so I can leave my 2 originals at home. $70 bucks for the key online, seems like cheap insurance.
