First recall?
I got an envelop from Ford in today's mail that said "Recall Notice" and thought oh well I guess my truck was on the list.
But after opening, it was for my wife's Explorer something about door handles.

According to ford owner I'm on the list, called the dealer and they said they won't have parts until the 18th, goes in on the 18th at 0700. Hope whatever prompted the recall doesn't break before the 18th. Going to have them fix my drivers seat leather at the same time. Looks awful it's so loose that you can pull a few inches away from the seat and still have leather in your grasp.
When a new recall is announced service departments get blasted with phone calls. This causes a natural response from service advisors that goes something like this, "That recall just came out so there's no parts available for it yet. It will probably be a week or 2 before we have the parts so I'd recommend you call back then.". Most the time they haven't even bothered to read the details of the recall. In this case, it requires an inspection of the steering shaft. MOST vehicles are fine, those that aren't may need parts ordered but Ford is going all out to make sure that there's not a lot of negative reporting on this. They are offering a rental car, washing of the truck before you pick it up, and topping off the tank with gas. So if your vehicle is affected by this recall schedule it in to be inspected, it only takes a few minutes but does have to be written up and worked in their shop load. Most likely you'll be on your way in about an hour or less.
Yep, it's just a fact of manufacturing. At least Ford is fessing up to this without a grunt, unlike some companies in the news lately.
I'm not sure there's really a better way to handle it. I mean, after all the time it takes to identify the problem, then isolate the potential production runs which may have the issue, the only thing you can really do is blanket-mail all the VIN's in that group and hope people come in. By blanket-mailing all those people though you cause most of them to freak out a bit. Can't really help that, though.
