Default Factory order - error

Hi everyone, just wanted to share a recent experience and see if anyone else has had the same happen to them. I ordered a new '19 Lariat (502a + all the options) back in June to replace my '15XLT. I'm not a fan of the chrome appearance package, so I ordered the Lariat with the sport appearance package instead of jumping to the platinum b/c of the silver/chrome trim. I finished the paperwork and went outside to perform the inspection - first time I've factory ordered so I was so pumped to get exactly what I wanted. Turned the corner to see the new beast and.....chrome everywhere - what?

Sales guy thought maybe the guys in the shop prepared the wrong truck for delivery - but we checked the VIN and keys and it was the right truck. We went back to see if maybe the truck that was delivered to the dealership wasn't mine - maybe mine was at another dealer...nope, order matches VIN and truck. We then went back to the order to see if the error was at the submission to Ford back in June. He still had the draft order we had printed and physically checked each option to make sure there wasn't an error, we compared that again to what was submitted in the Ford system...both said "sport appearance package". The window sticker on the truck says "chrome appearance package", so I assume nobody at the factory noticed b/c the window sticker matched the truck that was staring them in the face...but it also means they don't perform a 3-way match to the original order.

Dealer has taken action to correct Ford's error, they've been great. The truck has all of the technology I want, which would have been much more difficult or impossible to change after the fact so I can work with cosmetic differences. The dealer ordered the bumpers, mirror caps, door handles to match so they will make the exterior what it should have been from the factory. The interior is more difficult as the various wood inserts (doors, dash, console etc.) need to be changed to the carbon look and they aren't separate items...it likely needs a new interior door skin.

Just wondering if anyone else has ordered from factory and received something different than what they expected?

First I have heard of this happening. I imagine it does happen from time to time. Glad to hear your dealer is taking care of it.

Wow. When mine came in I was notified immediately so I drove over and looked at it before it was even prepped. Still had all the shipping covers on it and everything so was able to check that it was exactly what I ordered, it was, but had it not been, well, I would not have been happy, nor would I have bought it.

Word to the wise, never sign anything until you verify 100% what it is you are signing for. Good thing the dealer is standing up for this screw up.

I figured they would just reorder it. Which would suck because of the wait. It's going to cost a lot to change everyone out. Maybe Ford is picking up the tab? But you have an amazing dealer who is willing to make it right!

(If you ever have body work done make sure and tell the body shop otherwise they'll order the parts based off the VIN.)

I've had this fear that I'd show up at a dealer for them to say, "here's your truck!" and for me to reply, "no it's not." I just flew 900 to get mine and the thought did cross my mind. Doing the deal long distance meant that I told them on the phone which one I wanted instead of being there in person and saying "I'm buying this truck I'm sitting in right now." Of course when I got there the right truck was sitting out front ready to go.

Despite doing most of the paperwork long distance and the dealer already having the check from my bank, I made it clear that the deal wasn't done until I got there and inspected it.

That's crazy, there are a lot of checks that should prevent that, but as mentioned it certainly CAN happen. If you can, post the VIN or if you don't mind messaging it to me, I can run it through a BOM tool and check what the build order that Ford sends the plant has, kind of a middle step between dealer order and plant build.

My question is, if you go to the ford database what does the VIN search return? Chrome or Sport. If it returns Chrome I wouldn't accept the truck.

You are buying brand new, you deserve to get what you ordered, not a customized version. Which is what you would have if they change to the sport appearance but VIN still says Chrome.

Conversely if the VIN shows Sport and not Chrome well then that would be different in letting them change it.

Just my $.02

I get not wanting to be a dick but after all this isn't just a steak dinner at a restaurant. We are talking about 10s of thousands in investment.

No surprise given how our "workforce" has "evolved" over the years.

So, you would also have the woodgrain pieces inside the cab instead of the carbon fibre looking trim pieces?
Anything else missing?

I wouldn't want the dealer guys swapping out all those parts on a brand new truck, especially the interior stuff.. I'd reorder, or if it's too late, wait on the 2020.

What did your DORA say? I bet whomever put the order in clicked on the wrong option, and if you received a DORA, it would have shown it.

I wouldn't accept anything being modified. I would want the truck reordered.

Yes. Every time I've ordered a truck, I don't even walk inside until I look it over to verify that even the smaller items are correct.

Could be worse, I suppose... Like Clark said, "I'm not you ordinary, everyday fool..."
