I think I finally figured out how applink works. have to plug in AND disable carplay. Then apps showed up in the mobile apps tab. I am scared to update my phone though, as someone in another thread mentioned losing carplay with 11.2.5

I'm beta testing 11.3 currently and it works for me. I'm curious about disabling carplay.

I just tested, what apps are available with the carlink? Mine didn't find any.

For folks getting the Bad Installation File error, or the memory error, I'll post what worked for me as I was getting both. Symptoms were the Voice recognition wasn't working (was never ready), couldn't read back texts, was still displaying 1.0 for a version and there was no Gracenote version displaying. This is Non-Nav version, but may apply to the Nav version as well.

Looks like I was stuck in the middle of the failed upgrade. Tried pulling the fuse, tried disconnecting the battery but none of it worked. Saw the post in here suggesting you run one file at time, but that kept blowing up as soon as I got to the second group (Bad installation file message, the first set of files installed one by one without issue).

Then read the post saying that you need to leave the USB in for the first reboot. Used an unedited install file thinking I'd let it run right this time, and got the bad install file message again. Figured it was just the last set of files I needed to run, so I edited the file again as shown below so it would only run the last file from the first grouping and all of the second group (note that I just added semi colons in front of the lines I didn't want to run, rather then deleting them entirely). This time when I ran it with the edited file it went through and successfully updated, but I had to do it exactly like this:
  1. It came up immediately with the updating software message.
  2. It finished off the first bit quick enough then it said it was done and that I should remove the USB (don't listen to it, it's lying, leave the USB in).
  3. Again, don't remove the USB at this point, let it reboot on it's own. Leave the USB in, don't hit close on any of the messages. Let it do it's thing.
  4. When it comes back up it says again it is updating the software, I assume at this point it installs that second grouping of files. It does it for about 20 minutes then it tells you again that the installation is complete and you can remove the USB. You know you're in the right spot when it doesn't automatically restart or move past this message.
  5. At this point I closed the message, and turned off the truck for 5 minutes (opened the door so the Sync would kick off for the 5 minutes). When I restarted the truck and the sync splash screen came up, I finally removed the USB.
  6. When it booted back up it was all good, everything works again, tells me the Sync version is 2.3, gracenote version is 1.1.1 or something like that, voice recognition works again, it reads texts, and Andoid Auto is in the settings now.
(note, your files may differ. Someone else only had 6 where I had 8? Should still work the same though. Add semi colons before all but the last file in the first grouping, change the Item # and Open # to Item1 and Open1 for that last file (not sure if this makes a difference or not, but it's what I did) and go through the above process.

My file example (what I changed is in blue text)

Apologize if this is old news or known information. I didn't see it in this thread though, so figured I'd post er up and hopefully save someone else a major headache.

I started seeing that a few weeks ago too, then realized the date after "Last confirmed install" matched the date of last known check for updates via wifi inside the truck, not the last install of sync 2.3 which was on Nov 14.

Someone's asleep at the wheel over there.

I have a '16 F150...updated Sync 3 first of last year so that I could use Android Auto. FYI...you MUST use the OEM USB cable for Android Auto to work. I tried a cable I bought from Amazon and it would not work. You don't need to use a cable with Sync3 though...just when you want to use Android Auto. Not sure why because the phone is still connected via Bluetooth. Gotta be the dumbest thing ever.

Now the question is, are people experiencing Android Auto (AA for short going forward) running inconsistently? Start my truck, wait a second, plugin my phone and sometimes AA works, sometimes it doesn't. On some days, it will work right off the bat but if I switch it to Google Maps, start a navigation and Google Maps speaks, the "prompt" volume can be controlled but then I can't turn the main volume up or down. I have to unplug my phone in order to restart AA then it all works perfectly of the rest of the day.

As soon as Waze is available via the next Sync3 update, I will completely abandon AA until all the bugs are worked out. Now are these bugs specific to Sync3 or the AA app provided by Google or maybe a little bit of both???

Makes no sense that it works 90% of the time.
Waze has been available for AA for months and with 3.0 you must use AA to get Waze to work
Please update to 3.0 it addresses the launching and freezing issues on AA. I use it all the time with an LG G4 running Android 6.0. I also am using high end aftermarket cables and have had 0 issues.
Also how often do you reboot your phone? It is a computer and should be restarted once a week.
Google and Apple are working on wireless car interfaces but the restriction is the amount of data over Bluetooth.

The poster was talking about the direct Waze integration with Sync 3, which is coming in a month or two. However it will initially only work with iPhones.

Wireless AA and Carplay use BT and Wifi together, much like they use BT and a cable today. Wifi handles the bulk of the data transfer. Vehicles (or aftermarket HU) need to be equipped with Wifi access points for it to work; while newer F150's have that option it's not clear whether they can or will eventually be updated for wireless AA and CP.

My wife's new BMW has wireless Carplay (BMW doesn't support AA) and it is pretty convenient, assuming you like Carplay in the first place.
