Finally got the truck into the dealership. They confirmed the APIM failure and ordered one. Hopefully I can finally put the issue to rest when it comes in.
Hi everyone. I've tried reading many many posts but can't find a clear answer. I updated from v1.1 to 2.2 BEFORE the official update. After, there were many glitches with android auto (plug in phone and AA doesn't load. unplug replug several times then it will, press voice button and music in background doesnt mute so google wheel spins and spins, etc) I was wondering if redownloading and reinstalling update would help but can't find it anywhere. ford site says I'm already at 2.2 so no luck there. I've performed master reset and power+forward button reset with no luck. Overall, just doesn't seem stable.
I have 16280_product v2.2 with gracenote numbers listed. Whats the best way to reinstall and where do I find the NAVIGATION version? Is it my APIM? take to dealer? would moving to version 17011 help? if so, where do I download nav version? prior links in prior posts didn't work anymore. Help please! Michael
I downloaded the update from Ford as listed for my very own truck. I tried installing it as directed and it would not install. Said it was full or not compatible with my 2016 truck. I have version 1.1. so the chat guy said he was upping this to someone who would call soon, like 10 days. I did the reset and everything. I have always had bad luck with that sync 3. It will not upload my apps from my phone, etc. Dealer had to disconnect the battery once to get it unfrozen. Maybe I have a lemon...
Currently sitting in my truck waiting for the system to update. Earlier it had it running for an hour saying "Updating System Software" and it doesn't appear to have done anything. Hoping it takes this time. The only difference was the last time the DONTINDX.MSA file was missing from the USB drive. Considering there's nothing in that file, I'm not sure what different it might make. Fingers crossed!
EDIT: Looks like it didn't work this time either. I unplugged the USB drive and restarted the truck, and this time it said the installation failed because there wasn't enough room. Im trying it once again, but this time I reformatted the USB drive, downloaded the update, extracted and copied to the USB drive all within Windows instead of through my Mac. Not sure what difference it would make except for MAYBE something with how MacOS formats a drive into ExFAT vs how Windows does it. We'll see in a few, I suppose.

The upgrade was successful after performing a Master Reset of the SYNC system. I plugged in the USB drive and within about 20 minutes the upgrade was complete. Installing the USB Module wasn't as bad as I had anticipated. Getting the USB cable form the back disconnected was the hardest part.
So finally, a year after getting my truck, I finally have CarPlay. Thanks to this forum for all the help!
Anyone using Google Voice (and thus Hangouts) with Sync 3? My phone (Samsung Galaxy S6 Active) paired easily enough, but I can't seem to actually get it to dial out or to show texts coming in via Hangouts; I can see the texts that come in via the Messages app and got an incoming call fine.
