Default Cam Phaser question

I am considering the purchase of a 2018 F150 with 62K miles. I noticed on the Carfax report that it said...

"Manufacturer Customer Satisfaction Program issued
  • Program #21B10 POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE REPROGRAM
  • FOR CAM PHASER RATTLE"
Do you think this means it was fixed or just traded in with the problem? I realize the best way to know is to ask, but I just wanted y'all's opinion.
Thanks!!

I just pulled into the dealer for an oil change. I pulled up FordPass looking at my points and saw this recall so I asked.

It didn't show up on my truck report as an active recall so they thought it was an old one but called service. The service manager came out when I had referenced this recall code and said he was shocked I knew about it. They got word of it yesterday but it must have just hit FordPass.

He said that it is a programming update and the update hasn't even been released yet. Basically from what he has read about it, they won't do the update unless you have the cold start rattle. If it doesn't fix the rattle, then the second part of the recall is to replace the cam phasers under an automatic extended coverage for this issue. I didn't ask how long they are covering this issue but I have seen stuff like 10/100k. I guess we will see.

I don't have the cold start rattle so we just left it at that. Doesn't sound like they could do it yet even if it did.

Yes, it was dated 3-2-21, so very recent, obviously. Thanks for checking on it! Sounds like Ford is taking action on this continued problem!!

once the update is available i would definitely make them do the update even if it doesn’t rattle just to head off future problems that would require the engine to be tore apart. Worst case i would pay out of pocket for the update, if they fight about doing the update. They couldn’t possibly charge too much for the update.

There is another thread on this recall specifically. In it someone posted a video.

You have until 31 August 2021 to get the update done.

For what engine? What's in the 2018 you're considering to buy?

Good reason to disable Auto stop start... save wear on your poor phasers

I was just told this morning the same thing. Program is due out in May sometime. He won't schedule the update until they have it ready to go. So we will see what happens.

*Update , I was the first one to get the new recall program. The one scheduled for May is for newer trucks. Mine is a '19 Platinum. It's a whole ECU reprogram so we will see how it goes.
