Bed Liners
Bed mats protect well, even in lots of use. I have plastic cover on my tailgate but don't like drop ins as they rub paint off over time. I've tried themwith the plastic foam liners underneath and they are a PIA too. Drop-ins probably are the only way to avoid things like gravel hauling damage but that sort of use is gonna damage anything anyway and only a nutcase hauls rocks in a new truck? My bed mat is a very hvy 2nd and looks new after almost 6 years of use. I have a sawmill and often haul lumber and with careful placement there's not much bed wear at all. The nibs on the underneath of the mats cause zero damage to the paint. Spray-in liners look nice but unneeded by most people IMO. I almost ordered one for esthetics only.
I ordered a factory spray-in liner on my 2015 F150 and will be adding a rubber mat when it is delivered. I also have a heavy duty tarp and some cords handy if I need to haul some leaves, mulch, garden soil or etc. Probably overkill, but I like to keep my truck looking as new as possible.
My thoughts exactly!! I hate crawling around inside a bed with plastic liners or rough spray in liners. I like nice and soft when in there. Plus if you put something in the bed you don't want scratched, you don't have to worry about it with it being carpeted.

We spend a lot of time at the beach and other sandy areas. Wouldn't want a carpet there. The mat can be easily swept out.

I do imagine it's easier to slide things in and out on a carpet though.
