2018 5.0L with Multiple Problems
Funniest thing for me is I could probably actually love with the diesel engine transmission whine, but I the damn clack, clack, clack rattling every morning for the first 5 minutes I'm driving . Even if I warm up the truck with auto start for 10 minutes, it still does it. Going in for the TSB, but I have no delusions that it will fix the issue. .
Hate to jinx myself here, but I don't have any whines, whistles, clunks or any other issues at 3200 miles.
if i do i can't hear them. Trust me after reading these posts I sure listen.
I have had to add oil though. I added 2 quarts which was a bit much. So I'm guessing i was at least a quart low.

So I finally got the truck back from the dealer yesterday.
1. They aimed the headlights, I didn't realize just how awful they were before, they're great now!
2. They told me the whine noise at idle is normal
3. They told me the whine noise when it shifts was also covered by the SSM for the noise in #2
4. They applied the TSB for the VCT rattle, which, as some have noted, didn't work. It just rattles at a higher RPM now when you let off the gas, but it's still very much there (also had them document on the invoice that there are no mechanical damage or long term concerns with the noise, per them)
5. They couldn't replicate the gear slipping issue, and I haven't had anymore problems since
6. They couldn't replicate the bang noise when warm starting, they said there's "no way" it could be the driveshaft, I told them to go search for videos, that's what it is. They still just said there's no way, it's not possible. Period. They also noted on the invoice that the only noises they ever heard here were from the AC compressor engaging during every remote start sequence (this is the only one I'm a bit disappointed in, but don't think it's worth pursuing any further)
6. I didn't even brother bringing up the warped dash issue
Surprisingly, I'm pretty cool with the outcome, even though they really didn't "do" anything. I don't think any of the issues are really worth fighting, and while I do think, subjectively, that the whine is loud and annoying, as long as it doesn't do any damage to the transmission I don't care. I made sure they stated on the invoice that the whine "does not affect the operation or durability of the transmission." So I guess that's a plus. If I have additional problems in the future, that's what the warranty is for and I've created the paper trail with Ford in my case with them as well.
Personally, I wouldn't feel right pursuing a buyback or lemon just because of noises I dont like, there are people who really NEED those lemon law/buyback protections for problems much worse than noises. I probably wont even notice the noises in the future, and for now, since it rolled over a thousand miles while with the dealer, it's time to hook up the camper and see how this beauty tows!
I still cannot find evidence of a 10R80 that doesn't whine at idle and when shifting, but I'm always happy to be proved wrong. And ultimately, I've learned that I need to pay much better attention to these things during a test drive in the future. For now, I'll continue to enjoy my gorgeous truck and killer 0% financing!
Thank you all for your advice and insight through all of this, I hope this thread will encourage some others who are frustrated by the noises. That said, I would still encourage people to bring their trucks to the dealer or reach out to Ford (who will just tell you to bring your truck to the dealer lol), so these issues can get documented and maybe Ford will decide to do something about them if there really is a fix that can be done. For now, it just seems to me like poor engineering choices on the drive system and choice of transmission pump. Seems that the fiberboard/carpet insulation that's on the EcoBoost models right under the transmission DOES help reduce the amount of noises heard significantly.

While I certainly hope for everyone that the noises are simply nothing more than noises, mechanically speaking, whines and rattles are never normal. I've never owned a single vehicle where either one of those noises was normal. The lemon law is there to make customers whole when their brand new vehicle has a significant defect or impairment and the manufacturer has failed to fix it. The whine could just be a whine, or it could be a faulty transmission pump or valve body. The rattle could just be a rattle, or it could be a faulty tensioner. At the end of the day, Ford wants you to walk out of that dealership thinking exactly that...they're just noises. Then 50,000-100,000 miles later, if you still own the truck....they're nowhere to be found when something substantial breaks. At least for me, I'm using the lemon law to get Ford to buy back a defective vehicle they failed to repair because I paid the $60,000 for a vehicle that was going to last...not one that was going to operate like a vehicle with 10x the mileage that could not be serviced or diagnosed properly any time I brought it to the dealership.
Again, I'm not trying to get you to think one way or another but people certainly should be able to get these types of problems addressed by the dealership and if they can't, that's what the lemon law is for. There isn't a limit to how many people can get buybacks. If Ford builds 1,000,000 defective trucks and all of them meet the lemon law criteria, then technically Ford has to buy them back....all 1,000,000. The onus is on the manufacturer to produce a vehicle that meets the standards of a new vehicle...if they can't and refuse to resolve it...then they have to pay. When customers walk away from the problem, then the manufacturer gets what it wants....and the issue never gets resolved.
Happy trucking.

I certainly agree with you 100% in all aspects, all I want people to ALSO consider is that perhaps the noises really are just noises, and are NOT indicative of any impending failure or guarantee that they will present problems in the future, that's all speculation. I do agree that the noises are not present on other vehicles, but like I said, my biggest concern would be that I'd pursue a buyback or the lemon law for something that really wasn't a problem to begin with, as you mention "they failed to repair," but what if there was really nothing to repair? There's plenty of stories on here of people who had transmissions and/or pumps replaced, with the exact same noises continuing. IMHO, not worth all the headache. I still maintain my stance that I should've heard the noises on the test drive, and Ford should've done some better engineering to eliminate these noises.
I might still have another dealer give me a second opinion just to be sure, but not likely unless I have another PHYSICAL problem, like not shifting or not engaging, etc. All I meant to infer was that we should be focused on the positives (kick *** trucks, power, comfort) and deal with the negatives in stride. My dealer did leave it open about the clunk, said that If I could help them narrow it down, they'd be happy to take it back in and see whats happening. Either way you slice it, attitudes are like boogers, might as well pick a good one.
That's all I meant to infer!

To your other point...totally see where you're coming from
Man gopher, some of the things you said really hit home with me. I think I'm going to continue the saga, you've brought up some very good points. I'm just trying to convince myself, as the dealer did, that the noises must just be par the course. Then I think about the Ram I got rid of, and she never made any of these noises..... I dunno.
I called the service department back and they were not happy to hear from me. Told them the rattle was still there as was the clunk and the whine. I'm just trying to convince ME that everything is normal now....haha. But at the end of the day, I'm not really happy with the noises, and I'm pretty frustrated that the service manager told me there was "no way" the driveshaft could be moving when I start the truck and hear the clunk. Stuck my phone under there and guess what, it's the drive shaft that's moving.
I'll leave the previous "happy" post for my own inspiration and to remind me to be positive! I'm still going to see what Ford can do about making this right. If they could make all the noises, clunks and rattles go away, I'd be a happy camper!
We'll see what they say, gonna call Ford now to update my case with them as well.
Wish me luck.

Good luck, I wish you the best in getting this resolved. Keep us updated!
Yeah...I'll be honest, it's worth trying to get fixed. I think some people take my comments about the lemon law as a mission for replacement...when in reality it's a mission to get something fixed. I still love my truck...at least what it was supposed to be. It was literally our dream truck...so when things went wrong on it, I tried very hard with the dealerships and Ford to get it fixed and kept getting turned away. As time went on, my satisfaction turned to frustration to the point that I no longer enjoy driving it...which sucks because problems aside, it's a great vehicle. You just don't want it to get to that point because then your only alternatives are to accept the defects, sell it for a loss, or if still eligible, push through the buyback process...and none of them are great options. What I'm trying to say is that if you can accept the issues and are willing to trade up in a couple of years, then maybe don't push it because you'll probably be more frustrated trying to get it fixed than if you were to just remain blissfully unaware. If you want something for the long haul...then definitely, it's worth trying to get Ford to make it right one way or another. That's my $0.02.
Good luck, I wish you the best in getting this resolved. Keep us updated!

Anyway, here's the latest:
I called Ford customer care again and was assigned a new case number, which was weird, but whatever. Very friendly so far with Ford Customer service, but no solutions other than "contact the dealer."
I then missed a call from my service manager, we'll call him Jim. Called him back and he mentioned that he had heard back from his Ford Engineer friend. Jim said that he explained my driveline lash/clunk noise to him, and told the engineer he was even able to find videos confirming what I was telling him on YouTube. Jim says the engineer couldn't believe it, he said it just doesn't make any sense. The engineer is actually going to visit a dealership tomorrow and crawl around under some trucks and see what he can figure out, per Jim. Jim also said that he would be willing to show the engineer my shift noise video from YouTube, so that was pretty encouraging. Like I've said before, so far, the dealership has been pretty cool about this whole thing. I just really hope that they can either fix these issues, or we can get some SOLID written proof from a Ford Engineer what's going on with these issues plaguing us. I'm not really interested in a replacement at this point, I think if we got to that point, I'd pursue a buyback (I really don't want to go through the hassle though) and then just hang on to my money and really test drive the crap out of everything before deciding what to do next. It's cold here right now so it's pretty much windows up, the few times I've tried to go windows down, the noises just bother me and I roll them back up, when then makes the shifting whine louder, I can't win! I also told Jim that at this point, I'm so frustrated (feels good to let that out, instead of just trying to fake my acceptance, like in the previous "happy" post) by the whole thing that I'd honestly just take my Ram back if they still had it. Jim was a little surprised by that.
The saga continues, looks like it's gonna be back to the Exploder for me next week! Boo
