To add to that quickly as an example, when I got my 2012 F-150, I knew Ford was about a month, month in a half, away from the 2013 F-150 that, with my identical equipment setup, would have HID headlights and MFT instead of the Sony/Microsoft Windows CE system they used for Nav in the 2012 and earlier.

I wanted both of those things, and knew they were coming because I did my research, but I had a great deal in front of me and those weren't the main reasons I was buying a truck, so I went forward with it.

No, and when it does you will need to go to the dealer and get a hardware upgrade to use it.

 

What hardware upgrade are you speaking of? I was under the impression it was an over the air software update for Sync 3 trucks

Yes it will primarily be a software update over the air. For Android Auto, that is all that will be needed. For Apple car play, a USB port upgrade needs to be done because Apple implemented secure authentication in their cable connections to keep them proprietary. Basically we need a little chip added to our ports to support Apple.

 

That is odd. The lightning cable has always had a chip in it. I have never heard of any USB port needing to have the apple chip in it.

 

You've never used CarPlay then.

 

I really wish we could get some clarity on this from Ford. The owner.ford site now has no mention of a hardware upgrade, after first saying we did not need one, then saying we need one and now no mention again.

This is really misleading. If CarPlay is not available, why are they giving me instructions on it's use. I sure wish we could get some real clarification on this.
