Default Weak A/C

87 F150 with 302. The AC is working, but barely. The blower works fine, it's just the temp of the air isn't very cool at all. It never improves and it never gets worse. It's been like this since I bought it a few months back. Any common problems come to mind? I've sunk enough money into this truck that I'm trying not to take it in for diagnostics. If you guys think it's a simple fix, I'll pony up the money and recharge the freon, replace the AC clutch, etc. if you need more info let me know what you need. Thanks so much for the help!

See if the system has pressure. If it doesn't, you'll have to add freon to see what happens.

I'd have it recycled and recharged. Those kits you buy at auto parts stores are junk. They only add freon into the old nasty freon. You need to recycle and recharge for the best results. I work at a shop that does it for 50 bucks... Those DIY kits cost almost 40.. Why not have a professional do it right for a little more money?

Yea, if you're really confident in the system you should vacuum it down first. That will also tell you if there's a leak.

Also check the blend door, it might be stuck in the heat position, there is an arm on top of the blower box under the hood, that is where the door is, check to see if its broken or disconnected.

The one under the hood is the fresh air door.

Hi guys, there's no such thing as old freon. Also, if it needs charging which is what it sounds like, there is definitely a leak. If you want the cheap fix get a can and the charging valve from an automotive store for $30.00. If you don't have a friend who knows how to work on them then your problem could be relatively expensive because first the leak needs to be fixed and then the system charged. Most A/C leak from the quick disconnects where there are rubber o-rings. Good luck, hope this helped

Thanks for the help, just have a few more questions. If it had a leak, wouldn't it all have leaked out by now, or at least enough to stop working at all? I've had it for 6 months now, and it's the same as when I bought it. Also, are you saying to add R 13? I assume the system would have to be completely removed of R12 first. Is all I need for the conversion the r13 and the port adapters? Sorry for the silly questions, I've never messed with AC systems.
